Hanging out with creative types.
May 4, 2012

A small group of us got together to other night to burn some steel wool.

Two of the guys had done this before and where well equipped to make these shots.
They did all the work, I pressed a button on my camera.

I used a Nex 7 with the 18-55 kit lens manually focusing it.

This was the first shot of the night, 10 seconds, iso 100, f8

Then we/they got fancy.

One of the guys did the model thing, add a strobe with a color gel, and a better holder for the steel wool, and you get something like this. (I did clone out the stand)

and this.

Our model did a fantastic job. these 2 exposures where 15 seconds long.

Thanks for looking.

Yeah, these are in a tunnel, that was planned.

On this night, it started raining, you can see the water flowing in the one shot.

The tunnel was a great place to do this. The tunnel was long enough for us to stay out of the rain, plus and foremost, it contained the molten metal so we didn't have to worry about starting something on fire.

2 things:

How exactly is that done? Meaning, what are you doing to get the sparks?

Second thing, 15 seconds is a long time to stand still, lol.

To get the sparks, you light steel wool on fire.

These guys had some kind of homemade holder for the steel wool attached to a chain.
They were lighting it on fire with a 9 volt battery.

Second thing, 15 seconds is a long time to stand still, lol.

You're telling me.
I was very impressed with the guy holding the sword.
I believe the flash was set off 2 or 3 times a shot.

It could be if we set up 2 flashes set off at the same time the ghosting might be less.

If you try this where things could start on fire, a fire extinguisher should probably be near by.

Without the tunnel containing the sparks, I'd guess that they would have flown 50 feet in all directions.
Oh yeah, remember wolten metal is very hot, and can leave a mark.

When I was working in a body shop I lit up big rolls of steel wool a couple of times with welding sparks. Hard to put out! Good creativity to make something interesting out of that.
