D4 - Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII + TC 2.0 vs Sigma 150-500?
May 3, 2012

Looking to shoot kids' baseball. Currently have a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII with a 1.4x TC. I'm looking for more reach.

Is it a no-brainer that the 70-200 with 2.0 TC will perform as good or better than the Sigma 150-500? Obviously I'm giving up another 100mm of reach.

Will be mounted on my D4.

Nikon D4

I've never used the Sigma 150-500 so I can't comment on it's quality. However when it comes to shooting action, I'd take a fast telephoto prime over any kind of telephoto zoom pretty much every time.

I had the Sigma and returned it. It was just OK, not a stunner. I shot with a D3. I'm currently using the AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR and am quite impressed with this lens. The VR is amazing and I'm shooting with the D4.

I have both the Sigma 150-500 and the Nikon 70-200 + TC2.0. Have never shot sports with either but for shooting birds I prefer the 70-200+TC2.0. Not that the Sigma's a slouch but the 70-200 seems to more consistently get good results.

Plus I like the fact that I effectively have a 70-400 combination available if I need it.

A friend of mine is considering shooting the 70-200 with TC20EIII instead of the Sigma 150-500 lens as well so he asked me to try out the 70-200 combo on my D4 on some aviation subjects and report back as he is located interstate.

I tried a few shots with it and it wasn't bad although I have had better results with the combo on the D3S. My best results that day came from the 200-400 both on its own and with a TC14 and even the TC17. This was the first time I had used the TC17 with the 200-400 and I was amazed first at the AF capability and then when I checked the images the quality of the images.

The best images for the day were still shot with a prime and TC attached. These were with the 400 f2.8 with up to TC20EIII and handheld.

This week whilst working on a commercial job I had to shoot the first flight of an aircraft and the only aircraft that could be used had an enclosed canopy and I had shoot through the persplex. Not the greatest situation and with limited confines of the small cockpit I reached for the 28-300 that I use as a walk round lens for the D3. I considered it as the 70-200 was a little too long and that in a prototype situation we may have to keep our distance and the 70-200 would have enough reach.

The results were quite good and will be used quite extensively soon by the customer and others. For commercial reasons I can't post them at the moment but expect to be able to soon.

Great feedback. Thank you.

I actually have the 28-300 but hadn't considered it for sports as I wanted to shoot wide open. But I will give that a shot tonight and see how it turns out.

Thank you for the reply.

I have the 1.4x TCII and I noticed the 2.0x TCIII is a version 3 compared to the 1.4x which is a version 2. Do you know what improvements were made to the 2.0x from v2 to v3?.

The 1.4 and 1.7 are at version 2 only. The 2.0TCII was not considered to be much good. The 1.4 is considered very good and the 1.7 good enough.

The 2.0TCIII is considered a good TC for a prime or pro zoom. It probably has nano coatings and is a different design to the version 2.

I've found the 70-200VRII+2xTCIIIe combo to be surprisingly excellent on the D800.
