A-57 300mm plus 4 x digital zoom
May 2, 2012

Here are 6 photos which I took today being curious about digital zoom quality.
Taken at 16mp in Aperture mode, max zoom was used x 4. No PP only 1/2 the size.

Regards,
Tom

Hmmmm.....why would anyone spend thousands of dollars on a lens? They are great shots!

Because while for most, who want simple print outs in a 4x6 or 5x7 or even just to post them to Facebook, sure...these are excellent shots that will serve well. Nothing wrong with composition or anything like that, but when you zoom in, the CA and pixellation of the images becomes very apparent. This simply will not do for larger prints. That is why people will spend on a lens.

To the OP: Great shots. I have a few heron images that I got a week or so back and all i saw him catch were a couple goldfish. The shots with the frog are awesome.

Yes, I agree that a better lens will do better work and I would buy one if I knew I was getting paid for it. But I must say that for my hobby this is satisfying (for now) unless I grow out of it. BTW these were just sample shots for others to see A-57 capability and I wasn't to worried about its composition. Thanks for your input.

Tom

Nice shots, but I think that when only 2x clear zoom is used the result could be better, could you post some samples of 2x and 4x zoom, thanks.

Nice work and it looks like lots of FUN!

Gives more fun and less pixel drivel drooling stuff.

I love the taste of the frog!

Thanks Kristoffel:
Yes A65 could be better depending on what do you expect from a camera.

Read comparisons, I wanted 16mp for minimal cropping and memory space also love the High ISO.

Tom

It is SOOC jpeg I think in 4x really look good. I wonder if shot in RAW and PP can get better than this and for large print say A4 or A3?

Cheers

I mainly just share my photos online, i'm not looking at big prints or anything.
as long as they look good 2000x2000 pixels (or a bit less even) i'm happy

Bridge camera's disappoint me in that aspect (even fuji XS1) and i'm not the person who wants to walk around with a 400/500mm telezoom and tripod ...

The A-77/A-65 is great for cropping as long as you don't go too high with the ISO. You will need nice sharp glass, but with 25mp, there is lots of room to crop.

BTW, the 2x and 4x are no different than cropping the original in post processing.

Not a bird pic, but here's one with my A65 & Tamron 18-270 @ max zoom, 1.4 digital crop, handheld, JPG right from camera.

And here's a crop. Printed nice at 4 x 6, but I don't think I would go larger after the crop.

Look closely at the pictures and there is that "digital" presence in all of them. The eyes of the GBH look unnaturally sharp. Don't get me wrong, the 4X or the 2X feature might be great for 4X6 prints but will never substitute a long lens with true reach. This is not meant as a knock against you, your camera or your skills which are all excellent but only against the digital zoom feature.

of course not, there would be something very wrong if it could match bigger telezoom lenses.

Anyway, how is the a65 + 18-270 tamron? (i'm looking to get this combo too)
I mean in general, not only bird/squirrel shooting

Hey if you're into birding then I'd suggest a good Tamron or Sigma zoom that can go upto at least 400mm. I bought a used 170-500mm and while that lens may have its drawbacks i.e. BIFs. it still is a good lens for stationary birds and slow flying birds.

That's true if you are just using digital zoom. If the OP is using the "clear view zoom" feature, then it is not the same as cropping in post. There is interpolation invloved with the "clear view zoom" which though not perfect, should give a better result than straight cropping. I don't believe the clear view zoom is available on the A65 or A77

I'm still waiting for someone to take say a 400mm shot cropped to 600mm equivelent, and compare it side by side with the same shot taken at 400mm with 1.5x clear view zoom. I assume the clearview shot will be better (maybe erroneously) but I'd like to see it for sure.

Just for fun!
