A fly on the Canon wall....
May 1, 2012

I would love to be a fly on the wall as the Canon DSLR marketing department discusses the next generation of DSLR's. Does it go something like this?

"Gentlemen, we need to produce new models that make the upgrade disireable but not canibalize the sales of the next generation". " We need to HOLD BACK advancements just enough for future profits"

Market segmentation is so "old fashion" now a days. Apple never said, "lets not risk making an iphone. Even if it is successful, it will cannibalize our popular ipods which our company depends on."

Nor did they say, "lets cripple the music abilities of our iphone, so that it doesn't cannibalize the ipod."

Make the best product you company can do, and price it accordingly... Apple products maybe expensive, but to most people, their products are the best of the best.

Most people would feed differently if it was their family member working in the Foxconn sweatshop.

There is another line of business thinking and philosophy as well, which Canon could learn something from: "It is better to cannibalize ourselves than being eaten someone else". You better strive to outcompete your own products before someone else do. (In still technological developing industries those are obviously more relevant and important than say, toothpaste).

No, instead they do things like make batteries non-user replaceable and offer no storage expansion so you have to spend an extra $100 for 8gigs when an 8gig micro SD card is like $9 these days.

I know this is more or less a troll post but what "advancements" have they held back in the current generation? It seems that they have given people pretty much everything they have asked for. The 5DIII is 90% of a 1DsIII for less than half the price. They essentially shot the 1DsIII product in the head – they weren’t too concerned about cannibalization of that one.

You didn't know about the secret Canon sensor with a hundred megapixels and 18 stops of dynamic range? I heard about it on the Internet so it's really hush-hush.

+1 Suck 'em in. Lock 'em down. And rake 'em over the coals when they want upgrades or accessories.

Agreed. Isn't the 5D3 the fastest FF camera Canon has ever made except for the brand-new 1DX that's not even widely available yet?

Yes there are certain 1DX features which the 5D3 didn't get. This includes the 100k pixel RGB metering system, auto ISO min shutter speed > 1/250th sec, and spot metering slaved to current AF point (pls correct if necessary).

OTOH they greatly improved AF, live view is better, has three silent shutter modes, significantly better high ISO video, upgraded weather sealing, locking mode dial, much higher frame rate, auto-saving of custom settings, headphone out jack, etc.

You do realize that significant parts of the NPR story on Foxconn were simply made up, don't you? The writer of the story (Mike Daisey) considers himself an entertainer, not a journalist, and NPR dropped the ball fact-checking his story.

I think that my wife has that sensor in her 50D. I am sure that is why her pictures always look better than mine

Stop that, damn it, you are going to make me want to run down and buy one

I admit, I was a bit surprised by the price but when you consider what they used to charge for pretty much the same feature set, it is a pretty good deal. It would be even better at $3k.

Yes, they can make better products they can't sell here in the US because no one will be able to afford them without a job. In the end maybe Apple will move their HQ to China too as that's where their market will be. If they do it will be good riddance IMO as it's just a toy with a cult like following for foolish people who can't read the writing on the wall.

The suicides weren't made up.

The suicides reflect more of the Chinese societal problems than what's wrong with Foxconn's working conditions. The few suicides in plants that employe hundreds of thousands of workers mostly in the high risk age is not out of ordinary.

Not to mention GM that makes sure you will replace your car every three or four years even if your car doesn't break down by then.

So you're saying that ONE or TWO suicides are okay? The stress trickles down from the top. Apple takes the blame for what happens to it's factories directly or indirectly.
