good stuff!

i've owned Nex7 for about 2-3 weeks. currently i have two lens; the kit zoom and nikon 50mm manual. to my surprise, i find myself using the manual lens more than the AF kit lens. i'm now looking for a good used nikon lens on ebay to mate with Nex7.

Although I have been shooting sports of one kind or another since 1997 I learned a good bit from your article. I currently shoot large swimming meets with Canon professional gear and have tried to take pictures in decent light at meets with my 5N. I got a few keepers but never considered using manual focus and I never thought of putting the EVF in black and white. You have inspired me to start over with my 5N and maybe with a faster Canon lens after I buy an adapter. My biggest problem is shooting indoors either in low light or high contrast backlight where I confess to using flash at a five hundredth or above using high speed sync fill for strong back light to get properly exposed faces. This usually calls for f 2.8 on a 70-200 lens. I also do almost all my indoor pool work at ISO 1600 to get the shutter speeds above 1/500 that really stop action. So I will go back to work on my 5N in MF with focus peaking in B&W and see what I get. Thanks.

I just saw that too, congratulations! I wanted to share some of my MF shots with my 5N (canon lenses). I think I'll post some of them here. Hope you enjoy.

"Since I shoot in RAW, I also change the creative style to black and white. The RAW file is left…well…raw…while the peaking color stands out even more against the monochrome image."

Now why didnt I think of that!

I will have to see if this works in low-light, although anything will be an improvement on the colour-noise mess I get through the EVF now..

Now, if the focus could also somehow make the EVF/LCD image B&W temporarily to help attain correct peaking setting, that would be perfect.

Great article and outstanding photos. I haven't used my NEX-7 yet for any fast action images. Going to have to give it a go. Thanks for posting.

I have to say, I have shared this frustration with the NEX-7. With a few simple changes, it could be a truly amazing tool and companion.

My hit rate for good shots is also low right now, but this is mitigated by the odd rare one that really stands out, and I get a sense of accomplishment from that. There is something quite satisfying to a tinkerer like myself in using old manual lenses.

Of course it doesn't work for all situations, and certainly not for impatient kids. But I was out for some drinks at a pub the other night, and I got some really good shots, which would have been more hastily composed and shot if I had an automatic. What I ended up with was pleasing to the eye, if not 100% pin sharp.

I love this idea...what an improvement!

Also, I like getting the immediate BW feedback - often I miss great B&W opportunities just because I don't think of it. This will help me on many levels.
Thanks!

Seriously, this (B&W mode + RAW with peaking) is an awesome idea. I know a lot of us are wondering why we didn't think of it earlier, but well, we didn't. This makes so much sense, and after giving it a try, it works great.

Thank goodness for creative minds!
