I'm looking forward for the clouds in my part of the world to take a f& g hike so I can try sky shots with a P510. Five straight days of doom and gloom overcast/rain is really starting to pizzzz me off.

Nice shot BTW.

If you get the HS30, Kim, maybe you could get the Hoya RM720 nm filter and test out IR? I want to see if it's as good as the HS20 in IR or if Fuji has employed a stronger blocker this time around.

Re: astro with the HS series
In reply to Billx08, May 1, 2012

Kim, I think its the extra zoom reach with your magnificent new camera, as opposed to the sensor, I remember seeing some terrific astrophotographs taken with the HS10 posted on here, that clearly showed the yellow banding and even the Cassini division on Saturn. Granted they were stacked, but terrific for not being aided by a telescope.

Im still trying to get the handle on afocal astrophotography with these cameras, why do they not have a marked manual focus indicator for infinity? So much easier with Olympus cameras, since all you have to do is get the marker up to infinity and it's all set.

Yes, I saw that early this morning, Kim..... a magnificent result with bicubic interpolation (I've never actually tried this before.) I suppose this is better than the intelligent digital zoom function of the HS30.

So you're getting the HS30 Kim? Nice..... if you could try afocal astro with it sometime, please let us know proper focus settings, as I am having some issues properly manually focusing with the HS20 and my Celestron 8

Well said and I honestly dont see the reason for meaninglessly trying to derail an extremely useful thread that Kim started. My two main interests are astro and infrared photography and we dont see enough of either here. On the contrary, the btchiness is way too common.

I always go with PC based interpolation, but Fuji has gotten awfully good at it. Remember, though, that it only works in JPEG and I shoot JPG+RAW.

I'm sending the F770EXR back tomorrow morning

Which means that the HS30 should be the next one to arrive here for testing.

Unfortunately, a last minute trip to Sweden and severe computer problems managed to derail my best efforts to test the F770EXR ...

I will be interested in your findings as we.. I have a nephew who is growing his interest in astrophysics, and I would like to see how this cam would do for something for hum to use.
Will be awaiting.

Well, I/we really appreciate what you've done so far, I read through all your tests and they were extensive...... Im looking to buy a good pocket zoom camera and this fits the bill quite nicely! A nice step up from the F550.

Kids these days are getting to be so smart...... I was reading about this 12 yr old in college majoring in astrophysics..... quite astonishing

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/a-beautiful-mind-12-year-old-boy-genius-sets-out-to-disprove-big-bang/

and then there's the story of the 41 yr old who turned into a mathematical genius (with no math training!) after a physical assault

And don't forget moonshots with "many craters in crystal clarity". As Kim said. (lol)

That is their whole point. Kim started the thread, so regardless of what it's about, they attack him and don't care if their premise is rubbish.

One must wonder why you felt the need to ignore the obvious accomplishment of capturing Saturn from a compact in the first place. Perhaps you just don't understand, or perhaps you are blinded by your thoroughly demonstrated need to say any inane thing, no matter how irrelevant.

By the way, have you got a link to your own attempts to capture Saturn? Or have you never tried? And if not, what qualifies you to have an opinion at all on Saturn versus the pocket compact camera?

The only sound one hears in response to these questions is the faint chirping of crickets.

Jupiter is a winter planet in these parts and is visible only during the daylight hours. I can try sometime in the fall if I end up getting the F770EXR.
