Cheap tripod
Apr 28, 2012

Hello,

I have been researching recently the forum and on the Internet for a good, cheap tripod that will be able to support my NEX-5n with kit lens and eventually the 55-210mm one. I am going to use it only in a few occasions as I prefer shooting hand-held and usually do not need one. My budget is about £50. Can you, please, suggest any options?

Thanks!

A sand bag will be perfect. Within your budget. Video guys use them all the time on top of a milk crate.

I have the Giottos GIRT8150 ($34). It's compact and light. The max height is 40.6" and the fold length is 11". It is absolutely stable for NEX and the kit lens.

Slik 450g

Out of production but still obtainable on ebay. 450 is model number, also the mass in grams. You can get them for less than £10.

I have two "serious" tripods, but the 450g gets as much use as the two of them together. When I bought if for a camping trip, I didn't expect it to last 20 years, but it has.

Here's a wild option for you: The Sunpak 7575 tripod, otherwise known as the 7500 Pro Platinum tripod:

This thing is BIG and HEAVY. It's the polar opposite of a tiny "travel" tripod, but if you need a tripod for stability, you'll have to spend a whole lot more to get more stability than this will provide. Its footprint is MASSIVE, and it's plenty tall. The head is garbage, though -- you might be able to make do with it, but if you replace it with a quality head, you'll have a very stable tripod that'll get the job done without spending too much, overall.
