Alberta Aurora - Prairie light - Shot with an old 5D2
Apr 26, 2012

Hello,

Here are a few screen shots from a new timelapse video I put together.

On April 23/24, 2012 Earth experienced a G=3 geomagnetic storm. The Kp index, a measure of magnetic field, peaked at 6.33 out of a maximum of 9. The result of this disturbance created this Aurora event.

It was a beautiful spring night on the Alberta prairies. Temperatures were steady at 16 deg C with very light winds. As you can see there was some cloud cover, but I was able to get far enough away from it to still get a great view of the show.

Equipment:
Canon 5D Mark II
EF16-35mm f2.8
EF 24mm f1.4 ver 2
EF 15mm f2.8 Fisheye

Settings:
Exposure times between 3 - 15 seconds at ISO values ranging from 800-1600

Here is a link to the Timelapse Video. http://vimeo.com/41065458

Damn you, it is now almost too light in Whitehorse for me to see these anymore this year until September. Oh well, looks like that was another great show. I had 2 amazing shows this season, one in September and one on Valentine's day. Great shots.

i guess the beauty of the skies are sort of an opposite of the fact that alberta always elects such conservative douchebags into provincial power lol

Looks really amazing. How often do you get to see this in a year?

These are amazing, thank you for sharing them! The scenes with the aurora along with more mundane light in the sky/surroundings look otherworldly...

Thank you all for your comments! It truly was a magical display!

jnxr,

On average I would say that we get seven to eight, really great shows like this one, a year. This coming year 2012-2013 will be a solar max year. The solar cycle has an eleven year average. So the frequency of these type of events should increase this year.
