Do wide angle lens attachments on pancakes deliver decent IQ?
Apr 25, 2012

Having just picked up the 30mm pancake for its technical excellence I am contemplating occasional use of an add on wide angle converter. I have seen a few on eBay and they are pretty inexpensive.(under $20 US)

Moving onto my question, I am wondering to what degree, more or less, does the typical wide angle...or telephoto one for that matter, converter, typically degrade the imgage output? I see some potential artistic uses. I understand that light is reduced and some sharpness will be lost.

Hi,

I had a Raynox DCR-7900ZD on my Olympus 14-42mm and the quality was surprisingly good, even in the corners. The same wide angle adapter was somehow not very good on a Canon 18-55mm, nor in my Samsung 18-55mm.

I've tried a Nikon wide angle and a Ricoh with the 30mm and 20mm, and both produce mediocre results in my opinion.

On top of that you have that my Oly 14-42mm and Samsung 18-55mm have internal focus, so when you put the wide angle you are not stressing the motor at all, but on the pancakes the front part moves with the focus so you are increasing the weight significantly, so I would avoid that.
