HELP: Sony a77 + flashes F42AM in wireless mode = not firing
Apr 25, 2012

Hi, I have a big problem.

Just tested today the Sony A77 with 2 F42AM flashes set in wireless mode.

Initially the flashes fired, albeit erratically. After a few shots, the flashes stopped firing.

The on-board flash does fire, but of course I can't tell if it's sending the right signals.

I tested the same flashes with my A700 and they work perfectly, triggering every time.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I have a photo session this afternoon, I'd be a real shame to have to use the A700 instead of the A77.

Never had this issue with the A77 +F42, try mounting them on the camera and fire them ,then unmount and try triggering with onboard flash wirelessly.

Tried that, even changed the channel to CH-2.

When mounted on camera, the flashes work fine.

Now it looks like the on-board flash doesn't fire correctly even in normal (fill-flash) mode.

Either the flash is busted or it's a software problem, either way I think tomorrow I'll send it to service.

And the camera is barely 1 month old...

They aren't overheating, right? No blinking thermometer?

Nope, the flashes work perfectly fine with the A700. And to think I nearly sold it last week. I will keep it as backup instead.

There are now literally hundreds of messages / posts regarding a77 flash problems dating back to the earliest a77 release and continuing through 3 firmware updates without ONE SINGLE WORD FROM SONY TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE ANY PROBLEM WHATSOEVER !!

Sony listens ??????

You absolutely must be joking......

Well, maybe this "SonyListens" is a new start, a respectable, if slow to finally make its appearance, public effort. I say 3 cheers and let's see if we can give the fellow a lot more to take upstairs.

If Sony is making this move, and they are serious, this could be very helpful.

Incidentally, for Sony Listens, your logo phrase "make.believe" is absolutely ridiculous. The inferences are that Sony products are Alice in Wonderland make believe, not real, or useful, products. Suggest you pass that on and then come back to this forum where you can receive hundreds of suggestions for improvement of Sony cameras.

Finally, someone else gets how ludicrous the phrase "make.believe" is. It must of been a Japanese lost in translation thing.

The could post a legit free beer ticket here and people would decry the brand, the volume, the temperature and the IQ.

I wish a legit list of trolls could be compiled and posted and a button pushed and the bunch of them would go away.

make. (create)
believe. (confidence)

Have confidence in what you create.

Was my interpretation of the marketing motto.

Not "make believe"

There's a period between the words.

Period between the words....

Yes, and "Nova" is one word, but when Chevrolet tried to sell Novas in South America, the marketing effort completely flopped, because "No Va" means it doesn't go. Bottom line is that the period doesn't eliminate the strong negative inference.

But, don't make much out of my comments. Just exploring who this Sony Listens guy is and whether there is now a solid conduit to Sony for comments and suggestions.

Besides, I love my Sony products. I can do things with portraiture, both indoor and outdoor, that no other camera systems can do...

I applaud the initiative of having Sony representatives monitoring the forums. Hopefully they also collect user feedback and use it for future enhancements.

Anyway, the flash is now completely dead, doesn't fire at all.

I sent the camera in for repair, in the meantime I'll use the a700.

I was just idly wondering, seeing as how this is a flash problem related thread, and now that Sony is ‘listening’ if they could retrospectively listen back a bit, (about 6 years and on from there) and tell us why they screwed up the Minolta Macro flash system? (Deleted the ring flash and only kept the twin flash part of the kit).

I expect Sony will resume ‘not listening’ just like they always did in the past when it comes to that question though.

Since you're using wireless for a photo shoot, you might want to watch out for "lazy eyes." More info here:
