Where did my aperture chatter go?
Apr 24, 2012

I installed the new firmware for the XP1, and there's no more aperture chatter. I feel lonely and abandoned.

Also the parallax corrected framelines work in MF mode... kinda: they snap into place when I half-press the shutter. Beats me why I have to do that, since the focus distance is already known.

No other changes I've noticed yet. The chatter never bothered me all that much, and I was already getting used to it. Doubt I'll miss it now that it's gone.

What's the complaint du jour now?

The body and lenses are too light.

If your gear is not heavy it's not good.

neither heavier is better....

after receiving my X Pro 5 days ago and walking around with it all weekend, it is not near as impressive to people as walking around with my D700. Nothing says I am a capable photographer better than a large body with big glass.

One should be able to buy a camera case to put the x-pro1 in that makes it look way bigger and heavier.

I think the biggest thing from this point on is AF speed. If they can make the same incremental improvements that they did on the X100, I'll definitely be happy.

And to think, yesterday evening, I was at home aiming my camera around my house finding the best light source to hear the signature clickity-clack of the aperture and counting the number of clicks at each light source. With the new firmware, I'm not going to be able to satisfy my aperture chatter OCD habit anymore..., so it looks like I'll just have to go out and take some photos with the camera instead...

If I put my ear to the lens, I can still hear it. Wonder how they pulled that off.

There's only one logic explanation: Lemmings inside the lenses have now been reprogrammed to be more silent!

If you open the update file, you'll find a hidden txt file that reads "SHHHhhhh!"

My bet is that they slowed down the aperture mechanism. Maybe lowered voltage to it.

I just got my 18mm. It makes a nice purring sound when manually focusing.

It helps me get over the silent treatment the 35mm is now giving me.

I noticed the EVF adjustment seemed a little slower.

The camera with a lens is $800 USD too much money for what it is. Let the price come down by $800 and I'd buy another one...

I think it is because the camera's processor is only on when the shutter is half pressed. At other times the camera knows nothing because it is asleep. It may be possible with existing HW to change FW to make an exception to that so the processor "wakes up" when the lens's focus ring is turned or focus is aquired in MF using the AFL button (and once the parallex corrected frames have moved, keep them in the changed position until there is new infomation, at least in MF) and it might not. That is for Fuji's engineers to know and us to find out.

Some sort of flotation device?
In reply to Roy Hoynes, Apr 24, 2012

Perhaps some sort of inflatable DLR shaped covering. It would have cut down on the chatter and made the camera more impressive.
