Firmware 1.1.2 for Canon EOS 5D Mark III released
Apr 24, 2012

Hi,

Yesterday there was a new firmware released for the 5D Mark III. I don't see that this has been posted in this forum so I thougt I'd share it with you. Don't see anything relly major though.

The firmware 1.1.2 can be found here

http://usa.canon.com/cusa/professional/products/professional_cameras/digital_slr_cameras/eos_5d_mark_iii#DriversAndSoftware

Release notes:
Firmware Version 1.1.2 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.
1. Supports a new accessory, GPS receiver GP-E2.

2. Fixes a phenomenon where a pink cast may develop over the image when the shutter is completely pressed with the camera’s power turned off (by the auto power off setting).

3. Fixes a phenomenon where the camera operation stops after one shot when shooting in High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode.

4. Fixes a phenomenon where the Shooting Date/Time in the EXIF data of the image shows a later time than the actual shooting time.
5. Fixes the time zone for the Samoa Islands.
6. Corrects errors in the Finnish menu screen.

Canon is aware of it, and I vaguely remember that they are looking to see if it is certain batches of those lenses that have the issue. You can sign up for the email alert when to be notified once they determine the fix.

I like the way they refer to a simple bug as a "phenomenon".

Neat way of avoiding the word problem.

Anybody noticed a "clicking" noise on IS? After updating to new firmware 1.1.2, my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens started to make "clicking" sound when IS starts/ends.

When I went in, id my OS as Mac iOS, Lion 10.7, there was no firmware update. Why would that be? Any ideas?

It only seems to be available if you select Windows as OS for now. I'll have to fire up the PC!

Shot a wedding this last weekend, 700 shots with 5DII and 2000 with 5D3.

I set the times to the sec with my computer.. At the end of the night, there times were barely 1 sec off after 10 hours. But on EXIF, they are around 1-2 MINUTES apart.. Guess I sure could have used the UPDATE before last weekend..

I was about to lose my mind, all my pics were out of order between the 2 cameras, had to manually move them in order.. UGH..

Any ideas why the difference between OS 10.6 and OS 10.7? 5D Mark II had same issue with firmware update. Some people said it's related ONLY to how the OS unzips the file

I can't see it matters a jot, it's the same firmware and is platform independent. I think it has more to do with how the Canon bundle it with the platform specific software.

Bottom lone, if you download the FW and can unzip it and put it on your memory card then the camera will read it.

In the end I just downloaded the Win version to my mac and unzipped it there and it worked fine.

Not such a strange way to state the issue.

Definition of phenomenon : an observable fact or event.

So it's much easier to say

"Fixes a phenomenon where the Shooting Date/Time in the EXIF data of the image shows a later time than the actual shooting time."

rather than

"Fixes an observable fact or event where the Shooting Date/Time in the EXIF data of the image shows a later time than the actual shooting time."

I didn't say it is wrong. But it is both unusual and an euphemism.

And so it goes. New Camera, firmware update less than a month later.. One can only imagine the nightmare the 1DX will be since the 5D Mark III was an updated version of a mature camera... All new camera like the 1DX should be a hoot of firmware updates. Kind of odd that this continues with Canon each time they release a new camera.. What happened to field testing products...
