NEX E-mount Lens wish list
Apr 24, 2012

On the subject of wish lists, here are my top 5 for the NEX system to make it a crack set up:

1. 16mm 2.8 (or wider) G or zeiss wide;

2. 35mm f1.8 or f2

3. 70mm or a 85mm f1.8 or f2

4. 16-35mm G/zeiss 2.8

5. 200m F2.8 or 3.5 with OSS.

What's yours?

Since we are on the subject, here are the lenses I would pay for:

  • 35mm f/1.8 or faster with OSS (though OSS not a priority).

  • 85mm or 90mm f/1.8 or faster with OSS (stabilization a priority here, of course)

  • A 70-200mm equivalent f/2.8 or faster G or Zeiss lens.

  • 15-45mm f/2.8 Standard Zoom G lens.

I already own the 18-55, 50 f/1.8, 24 f/1.8, Sigma 30mm, and a ton of cheap and expensive legacy glass and their adapters.

I'd love to see 16-72mm with OSS and f2.0 at reasonable price - no G lens and its price tag plz!

I think you are forgetting that the vast majority of Nex cameras are / will be owned by simple Mom & Pop photographers not enthusiasts. A $200 Sigma will sell many more than a $1000 CZ.

More f 2.5 - f 2.8 primes and f 2.8 - 4.0 or even like the old days of film f 3.5 - 4.5 zooms.

Sure there will be some pro spec lenses especially if the Nex 7 continues to sell in good numbers.

Olympus make 2 - f2 zoom lenses for the 4/3 DSLR but not in such a large zoom range as the one you would like. Take a look at them and add a little in size and weight for the larger sensor and OSS.
Then get real.

35/2.8 Pancake
85/3.5 Pancake

I don't care if they're slow. I just want them to be compact pancakes (around the 16/2.8 size) and to have good IQ (they have to be significantly better than the 16/2.8).

Better telezoom and FASTER primes

Let them keep their sanity, but I'd really like some good quality, OSS, longer zoom like that. Perhaps more like 100-300.

And more importantly, where are the truly fast standard primes for e-mount? The Zeiss 24 F1.8 and Sony 50 f1.8 are surely good lenses, but where are the f1.4s and f1.2s? Canon, Nikon and Olympus all made 50mm f1.4s back in the film days, even f1.2s - is it somehow much more difficult to make these for the smaller APS-c sensor?

A 35mm f1.4 - thank you.

Mine are (in order of desirability):

  • 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Zeiss "R1" standard zoom

  • 8-16mm f/don't-really-care SHARP wide angle zoom

  • 85mm f/2 OSS STF portrait lens

  • 35mm f/1.4 wide aperture standard prime (with good bokeh)

Give me those, and I'm pretty much done. It looks like reasonably similar lenses to these are on the roadmap, I just hope they're all good lenses when they arrive, especially the high quality standard zoom.

Would you mind if these true pancakes come with built-in 20mm thick front plate to replace the existing one?

Normal pancake
In reply to nick berkeley, Apr 24, 2012

A 30-35mm "normal" pancake with a max aperture of 2.8 or 3.5 (or even 4!). Plastic is fine. No close-focus capability is fine. I'd even take it without OSS. Slight vignetting? I don't care! Just give me a cheap, small, capable lens to toss on when poster-sized prints aren't a possibility on the table.

I have a lot of lenses for my DSLRs. When I need the absolute best I can have it.

It seems like I'm completely missing out on the benefits of the small form factor by having no tiny lens to go along with it in my most-used focal length.

Were Sony to give me a tiny normal prime, I would sing the praises of the NEX system from the hilltops. As it is I'm singing from the lowlands.

Please. Just take the Olympus 4/3 lineup and make them work on the E-mount.

Seriously, if Tokina would make an E-mount 11-16 f2.8 (should be easy) and 50-150 f2.8 (and beat Sigma to the punch), I'd be happy.
