I've got a D7000,and was wondering what op's prefer ACR or Nikon capture Nx2 to use with nef files.
Maybe the Hokey Cokey is really what it's all about
Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G ED IF AF-S VR
Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED
AF-S DX 35mm f1.8
Nikon R715 (AF-S DX 18-105G VR)
I almost always now use Lightroom w/ the latest V4 profile (Camera Standard).
LR's conversion is now close enough NX that the most annoying thing is NX's interface and speed.
Some people freak out w/ a 'OMG, LR's conversion is slightly different from the back o the camera's JPG LCD'. Get over it; every conversion is different.
In the context of converting and editing NEF files, Lightroom uses the exact same underlying algorithms (and pretty much the same interface) as ACR. So, with regards to the original question, LR/ACR provides very good results.
Personally I like it better than Lightroom. Now I also have the color efex plugin and can do almost anything I want within CaptureNX. No need to use Photoshop or any other software.
With Windows7, CaptureNX is much faster than it used to be with XP. I don't know why, but it is pretty fast now.
