Rank the camera brands in order of your favorite to your least favorite

I am not asking for a strict comparison of current products, although that can certainly factor into your decision, but rather a general sense of which brands you generally approve of the most, considering both present and future possibilities. Here's my rankings:

Sony
Olympus
Panasonic
Nikon
Fuji
Canon
Pentax

Based solely on potential still Image quality across all shooting situations.

1 Canon/Nikon
2. LEICA
3. Fuji
4. would be a coin flip between any of the remainders.

I'd love to know what is the basis for your conclusions about the IQ between other brands being a coinflip

They all simply do an equally fine job regard IQ, IMO, and only features set them apart.

How many people actually use all those brands enough to tell? I can read reviews but only really know what I use.

Probably not enough.

I've used some 4/3 and m4/3 product, and can identify some brands by their image rendering and noise pattern, though I don't have "enough" hand-on experience with brands other than Olympus, Panasonic and some Canon, but I've seen enough photos from people of different brands.

Purely based on IQ:

Olympus
Nikon
Sony
Fuji
Canon
Pentax
Panasonic

Brand is irrelevant...
In reply to IcyVeins, Apr 21, 2012

Except maybe as a guide to build quality, the best camera is the one that does what you require, and that changes over time, and your requirements change over time as well.

Frankly, this strikes me as a meaningless enterprise. Each major manufacturer offers a number of different cameras, some good, some not so good, a few wonderful in some way. Ranking brands is fanboy entertainment.

Some of us do

I use Sony alpha and Panasonic u4/3 regularly. I have relatives in Canon and Nikon camps, and we'll usually swap cameras when we visit, so I've used a sampling of those systems for e.g. a week or so at a time. I'm relatively unfamiliar with Olympus and Pentax, although I've used both for maybe a few hours at a time (we just bought a bottom-of-the-line Olympus as a backup camera for some of the video work). I couldn't rank them, though. It's not a question of 'better' but of 'better for a given purpose.'

My impressions of the brands I know:

  • Best automatic modes: Panasonic, Sony (with Panasonic ahead)

  • Professional cameras (different from high-end amateur): Still only Canon and Nikon

  • Best video: Panasonic, Canon, as of recently, although I've heard good things of just-released Nikon

  • Best hand-held low-light: Sony

  • Best JPEG engines: Canon, Nikon, Panasonic

  • Best focus system at sane prices: Sony

  • Best lens selection: Sony, Nikon, Canon, depending on what you do

  • Worst support, and most buggy: Sony

This is biased by the specific models I've played with (although, in all cases, it's many models).

About right for me to. I would add Sony at the bottom just because I think it has a good potential in the mirrorless arena.

I would not touch the first three in you list if top preformance is the priority. This is coming from a dslr shooter of course.

Nikon
Pentax
Canon
Panasonic/Olympus
Samsung
Sony

honestly though, they're all pretty close, and it's the individual cameras themselves that make or break the deals.

Have you tried numerous cameras from all brands to come to this conclusion or are you guessing? Actually the difference in IQ between all the brands is so small as to be a matter of personal taste.

That is so true. I certainly don't have enough experience with numerous cameras from all the brands to even hazard a guess. I use Sony now and am very satisfied but that doesn't mean I "like" it better than other brands. I bought an A100 several years ago as my first DSLR because it seemed to be the one at that price I liked the best. I have stuck with Sony ever since and have a fair amount invested in lenses so I'm not about to switch brands. That doesn't mean I think that Sony is "better" than other brands. I really have no idea.

The answers to this will separate the Fanboys from those that are honest. Fanboys list a favorite while honest people will admit they don't know. I say this because only someone who reviews and uses numerous cameras from all the brands could give an honest answer. Anything else is just a guess
