More D800 at the zoo on a nicer day
Apr 20, 2012

The last zoo shots with the D800 were on a very wet, miserable and dark day, but today was sunny and clear, so better conditions for photography. Most of the shots from my last thread were at ISO6400 and at that ISO there is about 8.5 stops of DR, according to DxOMark so, a severe test of the D800's sensor and it still did a very good job, IMO. As we know, at base ISO it has about 14 stops.

One thing that surprises me is that it just does everything without fuss and it does with accuracy and speed. There are very few missed shots due to slow or inaccurate AF or VR not doing it's job, I think it quite a bit better than my D700 in this regard on both counts and better again than the D7000 (naturally).

I have included some heavy crops and also take note of the ISO's, whilst most not as high ISO's as the last lot I posted, there are still some reasonable mid ISO shots and some low ISO's as well and the crops from them are quite astounding.

Shot through glass.

These are much better pictures, and I like them very much. The small ant is a gem. How much processing? Vic

Is it just me or does anybody else find the high ISO performance shown here to be pretty impressive?

Were these JPG or Raw, and how much noise PP if Raw?

Thank you very much, Vic.

Just WB, some saturation, the high ISO shots, like about ISO2000 and above had Noiseware Pro applied, then reduced for web and sharpened.

Really nice shots !

It sounds like you believe the D800 to be a worthwhile upgrade from a D700, irrespective of just a higher pixel count ?

It's not bad, eh?

Were these JPG or Raw, and how much noise PP if Raw?

Shot RAW and then adjusted for WB, some saturation, the high ISO shots, like about ISO2000 and above had Noiseware Pro applied, then reduced for web and sharpened.

high ISO looks very impressive. Curious to see if Lance used NR on these. Even more impressive to me is the detail Lance captured hand holding the 500 mm lens and shooting at 1/200 sec.

It is definitely a worthwhile upgrade in many areas, but notably, in these instances, the AF and VR seems to work better with less fuss.

Thank you very much, Michael.

I did use NR, but only on the higher ISO's over 2000 and the tiger shot.

Beautiful shots, Lance. I am particularly impressed with the DR on those Gorilla images. I have a tough time with those in bright sunlight. The leopard is my favorite, or perhaps the antelope?? What the hey, I like all of them.

Good to hear that - now one last question:
I know the D800 has better DR than the D700, but is it really noticeable ?

To me that is an important consideration since both my wife and me occasionally shoot weddings under bright contrasty conditions where I found that my Fuji S5Pro fares better than the D700 as far as dynamic range is concerned. According to DXO the D800 has better DR at low ISO's than the S5, if that realises in practice then it can be a game changer for us.

I think it is noticeable, but I think it is by pulling shadows and avoid blowing highlights. However, I haven't done extensive testing at base ISO yet to make a really valued judgement, just a seat of the pants judgement based on the incredible way that you can pull shadows up with detail.

I shall have to take some photos of my dalmatian in bright conditions to really test it. I will try to do this over the next few days and hopefully get them up here for you to make your own judgement.
