24MP wasted on D3200!?
Apr 19, 2012

Okay, sorry for the trollish title, but I'm a little surprised no one has pointed out that since the D3200 camera is an entry level camera, most users will pair it with cheapo kit lenses that will not fair well with so many megapixels highlighting their every optical flaw.

Not that I believe that or anything, just surprised that objection hasn't surfaced yet.

I'm actually considering one for extracting more detail from my 600/4VR It's only a bit more expensive than a TC and doesn't degrade IQ after all

No worries, nobody is going to have that camera.

Nikon announce cameras like the D7000, D800, D800E or D4 but is impossible to buy it because all the retail stores are out of stock.

I'm trying to buy a D7000 from November last year and I'm still waiting.

I think I will be forced to sell my 6 lens and just buy a Canon D7 and start taking pictures.

On Nikons sample page there are photos from the 40 2.8 Micro. Then there are the 35 1.8 and 50 1.8. There are a bunch of low cost lenses that could do the sensor justice.

Wise not to believe it, because of course more megapixels reduces the visibility of optical flaws. Printing big exposes them of course, but that is a different matter.

I think it is a valid question.

It is a beginner's camera and they might not have or buy good lenses.
And to get sharp pictures you really need discipline with a 24Mp DX sensor.

But than why there are 8-12 Mp sensors in smartphones?

Because Mp sells.

But if you use a good cheap prime lens well and close it to f8 it will get all the resolution of the sensor. You don't necessarely need very expensive lenses...

No more than with a smaller MP sensor. In fact, a little less.

Bow to your new digital FM-2!
In reply to eNo, Apr 19, 2012

Well, people have been wishing for the digital version of the Fm2. Here it is, the top level sensor in a cheap and light package.... and of course, it's not what any of us actually want at the moment because of the dearth of DX primes.

I've a gut feeling that this camera is a harbinger of doom... if the dSLR market has reached it's terminal saturation, then Nikon looks like it's pulling out all of the stops to make sure that those of use who might have bought our last dSLR's ever will be paying more for more full featured cameras.

You miss the point completely.

Nikon will sell a ton of D3200, for the time being they will be able to court new DSLR and mirrorless buyers with a superior spec'd camera.

So from the corporate side there was not one thing wasted. To not release it and possibly lose sales to Canon, Sony, Panasonic etc. that would be a waste!

Is the D800 a waste because some lense are incable to resolve for the sensor?

Re: Never a watse, just better 'film' in the camera
In reply to frank207be, Apr 19, 2012

All Nikon has done is put better 'film' in the camera.

The crop on Nikon Rumours, showing a crop of a girls eye in a beach portrait, show what amazing detail the sensor has.

Together with the DXO Mark assessment of the D800 sensor, which , compared to the Canon MkIII sensor which is only 22MP, but the Nikon has way better dynamic range and low light , high ISO rating, defies the arguments that high MP means worse noise (though Nikon has gone the lower MP rout e with the D4).

What it says or confirms is that Nikons image processing sensor/ engine is the leader, only Pentax near.

The better sensor can never be bad. All of the samples by viewers on the D800/D4 forum indicate that whatever lens is on, will improve.

Good news for the expected D400.

Maybe Canon should buy Pentax???? for their processing capability?

I am not joking.

Re: Why do people say some lenses wont resolve on the D800 sensor
In reply to tyb, Apr 19, 2012

No evidence of that yet on the D800 forum, all reports are that AIS lenses , 24-120 etc are all performing well.

Seems very much like a myth to me.

Re: 24MP wasted on D3200 Why not buy a D200 used and keep as backup
In reply to MarceloLI, Apr 19, 2012

You can get a used D200 rated at 9 on B&H or Aodrama for about 500 bucks. Shoot and keep as a backup when you get the camera you want later?

No?

Remember the sequence? D3100 followed shortly by D7000?
In reply to eNo, Apr 19, 2012

Remember the sequence? D3100 followed shortly bt D7000? (One month later). Then the D5100 came out 6 months later with the D7000 sensor.
The D7100 is closer than you think . . .

Nikon is being very smart in catering to the entry level photographs. This will surely put a dent in the new Olympus OM D-E5 as well as Canon and Sony models. With 24 mp many newbies (and some oldies) will jump right in and probably buy decent glass as well. If not now, certainly later.

Lol. Some of you need to pull the stick out of your hindquarters. This is a great little camera for a lot of people. There's no need to wait for DPR's seal of approval, the Nikon full res samples tell the story and it is a beauty. Resolution undreamt of three years ago at this price point. Check out the hair and eyelash detail on the girl with the flower. The color is pretty darn refined as well.

http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d3200/sample.htm

On a 50" LED or plasma (the target demographic) the D3200 will look better than a good many earlier models ever could. Not to mention the hairsplitting 1080p video.

I was going to buy Pentax, but I'm saving up for an Ipad 3 instead ... I figure if my investment doesn't work out, I can alway sell the ipad after a couple of years and still get a reasonable return on my investment.

I am not joking.

Neither an I ...

ok, I am.

OP...it all depends on the shooter and the end use. For beginners, it may often be so. For ppl who have done photog for a living and just want a small light body with lots of res ...and do all their own controls manually...it may very well fill a need.
