24mm too wide, 35mm not covering enough ... ideally 28mm is the best walk around lens, at least for me.

Are you getting one as a "standard" lens on your FX camera ?

Thanks for comments.

It should sell well . . . especially as a tourist lens. Wide enough for interiors, and fast enough to handle dim light.

I'm all over this lens, if it's good at F2 and is significantly cheaper than the 24mm (it better be!)

Definitely looks interesting but will want to see some f/2 and f/2.8 shots that tax the resolution especially in the corners (FX). But if it's better than the 24-70 at 28mm and f/2.8 (which it really should be by a big margin) then this will be a purchase!

Maybe, maybe not.

The unfolding of Nikon's short prime system is a bit perplexing to me. I'm wondering if they are going to maintain the 1.8/1.4 duality at WAs 18mm.

I know there was a highly rated 28 f1.4 lens that was sold alongside the 28 f2.8. But will folks want to pay $1000 more for a prospective 28 f1.4 over a 28 f1.8 for example?

Does not make much if any sense for DX

  • expensive at $700

  • large as FX compared to 35 F/1.8

  • not exactly "normal" to countepart with 85mm F/1.8 (but it does make sens to have 28 and 50 and optionally 85 to cover better ranges if you are OK with hauling 3 lenses)

maybe you're using the word in a different sense, but 28mm is exactly normal on DX.

My Sigma 30 1.4 is my most used lens out of the twelve lenses I have. Maybe when the Sigma dies.

I have a 28 f2.8 CRC AIS lens I should use more, as I discover everytime I shoot it, but which isn't fast enough indoors. The 1.8G is a welcome announcement. The 28mm length has been a classic for many PJ applications in full frame, and even in DX it's not a bad length.

With the 24 and 35mm 1.4's I doubt Nikon would also make an intermediate length 28/1.4. It seems almost as if they tried that option back in the day of the 28/1.4AF-D and it didn't sell very well. Instead of making both a semi-fast f/1.8 24 and 35, it looks as though Nikon is going to try and satisfy both camps with a 28mm.

At some point they'll either have to update the 35 f2 and 20 f2.8 lenses or bypass those FLs altogether. Who would pay a$1000 premium over a 1.4 VS 1.8 at 35mm or 20mm? They've got a great line up here, but it seems their pricing and specs are not exactly well thought out, at least not to me.

People would/do pay a lot of money for a camera body that's 2/3 stop better at high ISO. $1000 for 2/3 stop on a lens (and usually a few other extra improvements) is easily justified by many.

28mm is kind of a "tweener" lens for me - I tend to gravitate either towards the 24 or the 35, so 28mm isn't likely something I'd use quite as much.

That being said, given my respect for the designer and some of his other lenses being my favorites (the 24/1.4G and the 24-70 to name two), I'll probably pick one up at some point just for the hell of it. I expect it will be a very nice lens.

I'd really like to see a new 20, but who knows, maybe in the future...

No. The 35/1.4 is perfect for me.
In reply to J195, Apr 20, 2012

I don't see a place for the 28 at all. My next prime might be
the Zeiss 21/2.8.

Would people pay a $1000 premium? Absolutely no question. They introduced a 35 and a 24 at the $2k price point, didn't they? You mentioned the hallowed 28 f/1.4. It was a lens ahead of it's time, fortunately and unfortunately. It was discontinued because of slow sales due to high price (relative to camera bodies, in my opinion). Today, even a $2k lens is less than a pro/prosumer body, so the relative price in people's minds is a lot less than it was back then, but I digress.

According to Ken Rockwell's article, at that time, the lens was the highest priced lens in the lineup short of the 300 2.8 and longer lenses. Today, the 28mm 1.4 commands $2500 on average, USED... with old, AF-D technology! IS NIKON BLIND, or just stu... Sorry, I almost went there. You have to just scratch your head at the way in which the Japanese sometimes reach these decisions, and also at the somewhat discombobulated Nikon lens line, in general. Example- current lineup= AF 24 1.4, 2.8 and MF 24 2.8; AF28 1.8, 2.8 and MF 2.8; AF 35 1.4, MF 1.4, AF 1.8 DX and AF 2.0. I understand why they made a 35 1.8DX, but are the 24 and 35 primes in such high demand to warrant f/1.4 versions, or did they just make them because Canon has similar lenses?

The 28 f/1.8 looks to be a spectacular little lens. They included (almost) all the good stuff in- Aspherics, Nano Coat, AF-S, robust construction like the 1.4's... then they go and give it 7 aperture blades and no weather sealing. No weather sealing on a $700 28mm prime lens? Really??? How much could a couple of gaskets really cost them? Yeesh!

So it looks as if this new 1.8 would be a cool little brother to an f/1.4 lens. You know, sort of like the 85's and 50's? But in my opinion, they won't make a new 28 1.4 until Canon has had one out for at least 2 years. Come on Nikon, be a leader again.... please. Rant over, lens ordered.
