Rockwell to Crown 5DIII "King"
Apr 17, 2012

Yes, I know many folks don't like KR, but he just posted that he's having a better shooting experience with the 5DIII than with the D800. He says he might have to give the crown to the 5DIII! He's missing the great shooting banks of the Canon and doesn't like the D800's defective LCD screen.

Disclaimer: I ordered a D800 but I own the 5DII. Tools are tools.

Re: Rockwell to Milk this for all he can
In reply to Shotcents, Apr 17, 2012

He is just milking this popular model release for all the hits he can get, and posts like this are simply feeding right into it. Just say no.

The problem isn't that people on this forum and photographers in-the-know can choose to read him or not, the problem is lots of noobies get led to his site by the high Google rankings he achieves, and they may not realize for quite some time that you have to read everything he says with a metric ton of salt. He creates an endless cycle of mis-information and mis-conceptions about digital SLRs and how to use them.

He discovered that add money from Canon shooters is as good as ad money from Nikon ones.

KR prefers to shoot jpegs and often shoots the smaller files. The D800 would be wasted on him. The 5D3 certainly fits him better, at least from what I know about him.

Since KR said 5D3 is better so I decided to go for the D800E, hahaha, me too a 5D2 owner and pre-ordered the D800E. this time around I am looking for a good quality landscape camera to replace my 5D2, so the resolution is more beneficial to me than the frame rate and the new AF system, for those situations I need a high speed frame rate I have 3 other Canon and Nikon pro bodies that I can use.

Well AF is everything to Rockwell
In reply to Shotcents, Apr 17, 2012

But for non action stuff, I find AF inadequate when you want the entire scene sharp from fingertip to infinity.

I already know that at 21mpixels with the sharpest lenses, focus technique avoidance of diffraction and lack of motion are super critical. I expect it to be even more critical at 30+ MP.

Each upgrade in sensor/lens resolution requires a new upgrade in technique by the user.

If I were doing action, the 1DX would probably be my choice if it lives up to promise.

What I see when I open the image and view it at 100% is very important to my overall attitude toward a final print. When I look at the print I know what’s there and what I had to do to get there. For me, good enough does not work.

Your assessment of KR's reputation is largely correct, and reposting links to his "recommendations" is a bit embarrassing and unnecessary, especially given that there are many credible and knowledgable posts on this topic that are far more deserving of a share.

And, "crowning" a camera as "king" of anything is, well, weird. Just saying'...

When it comes to KR, the one place where you were absolutely correct was when you wrote:
"Tools are tools."

I found his comments on the 5D3 and the D800 useful.

If I were shopping for a full frame camera, I would bear in mind his comments.

He places tremendous emphasis on the 5D III's ability to remove lateral chromatic aberration and implies that it will turn a cheap lens into a great one. Poor lenses suffer from more than chromatic aberration at the edges of the field, and the softness in the center of many lesser-quality lenses, especially wide open, will not be fixed with this correction. Still, the correction is nice to have, though it takes only a second in many PP programs.

Of course
In reply to Shotcents, Apr 17, 2012

Ken Rockwell prefers the 5DIII. It demands less of the user with its Full Auto and Creative Auto modes, and its JPEGs are much nicer by default for someone like Ken who doesn't want to have to touch an image in post. If automatic shooting and great default JPEGs from a full frame DSLR were my priority, I'd be waxing poetic about the 5DIII, too.

Me too, in order to make sure I do the opposite of whatever he recommends.

5D3 and D800 are both great cameras. Ken Rockwell's advice, on the other hand, is worth exactly what you pay for it. -iwbs
