Tamron 18-270 PZD- How good is this lens?
Apr 15, 2012

I have a canon 5d mark II and I'm considering investing in a Tamron 18-270 PZD to shoot short films. I'll shoot indoors and out at night and day.

How good is this lens?

It's pretty shockingly bad on APS-C - especially since it's an APS-C lens which will result in large black corner areas on your 5DII!

For film purposes with a zoom lens you need to invest into a parfocal lens - which encompasses only the fixed aperture L zooms.

well, for film such a lens would probably have enough resolution, since you need a lot less for film than still.

but this lens is APS-C, and not fast. But then none of these long range zooms are fast.
Either you go APS-C, or L lenses.

The new Tamron 24-70 f2.8 could be interesting with VC.

Would the Canon EF 70-20mm f/4.0 L USM lens be good general purpose and versatile lens to use for film?

Here's a thought which is used by the video staff at http://www.idlewild.org for our lack-of-a better-word "megachurch." They are using T2i's with 50mm 1.8 lenses. Tired of fixing $3,000 cameras and the quality is better. They've got this kit mounted on simple shoulder racks.

I presume you mean 70-200.
Yes, it's a nice lens, but then you don't have any wide-angle to normal lens.
