Just saw one listed on Ebay for $300. Seriously? $300 for a 70-210 that's not even in mint condition? Guess vendors are over anticipating the market a little thanks to Sony upping the prices for their glass...anyone?

There are always people on eBay (or anywhere else) who think what they have is worth more than it is...why don't you look at all the ones that sell over the next two weeks and take the mean. BTW, I love my beer can.

People can list items for any price. The question is, will the item sell at that price?

always .... always dictates price.

Hang in there, you'll find one at the price and condition you want.

I have an extra one I'm not using btw.

Funny. I've been buying and selling beercans, and stopped doing so because prices were dropping. I was getting $175 for a pristine unit with sunshade. That fell to about $145 .
Just keep watching, you'll find a gem at a good price.

I dont know if it is going up, but it fills a gap in the Sony-compatible line-up for a sturdy (metal) built with good speed (f4 or better) at a reasonable price.

David K compared it to the Canon 70-200 f/4 and basically liked the beercan more.

If Sony did make a 70-210 f/4, you can bet the price would be throught the roof. The beer can will continue to be sought after because it is a great value.

A new Sony lens would likely be expensive - certainly compared to the beercan. However I think a 70-200/4 would be a welcome addition to the Sony lineup. I have the 70200G but kept my beercan since it is smaller and lighter which is a benefit many times. Canon has done well with their 70-200/4 so I think it would have a place in the Sony lineup.

Since Sony bought Minolta I would think that they probably could make an updated beercan which could be very competitive. All that would be needed is a reduction in CA which could probably be achieved by new coating (cheap) or high performance glass element(s) (more expensive).

Given Sony's very ambiguous stance on FF (will they continue or not; if so will FF have OVF or not), the current beercan is a very attractive proposition.

I'd buy a a new Sony beer in a heart beat if it was small, light and weather sealed. I'm looking at replacing my beer can with a Sony 70-200 2.8 but it's just too big and heavy. And it won't fit into my pack.

I climb mountains so yeah, weight and size is a big deal!

I doubt 70-210 is any better. I had a pristine & sharp copy before, but could not stand its purple fringe (probably worst Minolta lens for CA control) and practically gave it away to a friend.

I was hiking yesterday with an A850 and a beercan and it didnt feel that heavy. It also felt quite solid.

Actually I was talking about the weight of the Sony 70-200 2.8.

I hike with an A77, 16-50 2.8 and the beercan....in snow with 30 more lbs of gear on my back and climb anywhere between 1,000-7,000 feet in a day. Then I snowboard down with that weight on my back. If I were to replace the beercan with the 70-200 2.8 I would more than double my weight (that lens weighs 3 lbs) and still not fit in my pack.

I was just wishing for a smaller, faster and lighter lens that was weather sealed.
