Need some help, now sure what to do with this photo.
Apr 8, 2012

I just returned from Peru and have a number of photos like this one of the locals but I'm not sure how to approach it in PP, can some kind folks please provide some guidance. I have an older vision of PS but I'm going to order Lightroom tomorrow. I was thinking about doing it in B&W but the colors are so nice that I'm not sure if I want to lose them.

The image is already good. Suggest a moderate lightening for the face and apply modest USM sharpening (for the entire image) to also slightly add contrast.

I believe with too much change (post processing) it could lose some of the appeal it has as the "Real and Natural" appeal of the image.

Example settings: select only the face, Image Adjust > Selective Colors > Neutrals set Blacks to -8. Then release selection and Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask and set to 30-20-0 for applying to the entire image.

Suggest you try this on a copy of the image and see what you think of the results

Vernon, thanks so much, that's just what I needed to know. I'll be working on this today.

Really nice and clean capture even after brightening the face up. I would fake a fill light and then do some selective contrast enhancements. Below's a result. I also converted to sRGB which is more web friendly.

You are correct about the colors.
In reply to ARB1, Apr 8, 2012

So I emphasized them till they hurt my eyes.

The colors, of my edit, are alright for web/monitor viewing but would not print well as too many colors would be out of gamut.

I used the Lab color mode to emphasize the colors

I made a copy of the background layer while in Lab, I then selected the "b" channel and performed an Image> Apply Image of the "b" channel into itself and changed the mode to Layover.

I then made a copy of the layer I just adjusted and applied the "a" channel into itself in Layover mode.

Then it's just a choice of Blending Modes for each layer and choosing an opacity setting. The Screen mode might work, but it's really a matter of your taste.

You may find that you only want to emphasize one layer only ("b" or "a") and that would also be fine.

If you have the raw file versions the edits would be still easier.

Thanks for sharing your colorful friend !!

With all due respect, I think you've lightened it up way too much. The only thing I'd tough is her face. He's got a great--a perfect--look with that Andean late afternoon sun on most of the clothing, and I wouldn't touch that. As I say, just bring up the face a little. Not sure how to do that in Lightroom; in Aperture you could brush in a little bit of exposure correction or dodging or shadow adjustment or levels or curves. Lots of options.

That's how I visualized it, except I would darken the background.

It needed brightening and I did it to my taste, so, with all due respect, it's how I would like it to be; was going to reduce shadow castes, but decided to leave them. Anyway, post your edit and let's see your vision.

National Geographic Script-fu.
In reply to ARB1, Apr 8, 2012

Looking back at my last result, it does appear a little too saturated. Ran that result through a National Geographic Script-fu for this result.

A refinement
In reply to ARB1, Apr 8, 2012

I did an initial edit Lab for the sake of the colors.

I then returned to RGB for a refining edit. I restricted the RGB edit to the shadow areas of the file using the Blend If photoshop feature.

FWIW I didn't find your previous edit over saturated.

I like bright colors in contrasty sunshine to be vibrant and lively.
Particularly orange, orange begs to be as bright as the sun.

Of course that's my opinion and should be treated as nothing more.

I like saturated results too Tom. Maybe it was just an excuse to run this cools Script-fu.
