A few action shots from today's HS softball game. Taken with 5D Mark III and EF 70-200 f/2.8L lens.

Hail to the AF king, it's hard to ignore the hard evidences being posted here everyday. D800 on the other hand, is for static subjects mounted on an extremerly robust tripod in ML mode.

What sort of percentage did you get as good shots?

Spoken like someone who will never be able to afford to own either one.

Nice pics, and an improvement over the 5D2, but come on. F4 at 1/4000s? The 7D, 1dMKIV, D300, D700 and D3/D3s were pulling this stuff of 3 years ago.

The D8000 would without a doubt too.

Then all you have to do is buying a D8000.

My BIF keeper rate increased coming from a 1D mark
IV. And yes I think this is great.

But for you all is clear right ?
You buy the D8000 which can do all.

I'
ll be getting both.

Maybe but these shots are not challenging AF situations. With this much light and 1/4000s shutter speeds, thee should be plenty of keepers.

With this much light, all the cameras I mentioned could pul these off. That's all I'm saying.

Very nice but nothing special

I see sharp, nicely focused, detailed shots with great color.

But the point made above is right, the shots are made in good light. A large number of cameras could have produced similar results.

If you define "good" shots as sharp, properly focused, I would say all of these came out good (generally the ones that missed focus are my fault). If you count the ones with missed action, then I would hate to guess.

Not sure why every thread posted here turns into a Vs D800. D800 wasn't even a consideration for me since I'm already invested in Canon. People have been asking for 5D3 sports shots for AF purposes, then when posted you guys tear them down saying any camera could do it. Just no pleasing the group, I guess!

I'm sure this is true, but coming from the 50D where I had to use center point AF all the time, it's really nice being able to use the other AF points.

Sorry, but if you're unhappy about peopel turning the thread into a Vs D800 thread, you might want to have a talk to Viva, who highjacked the thread with claims that the 5D3 is king of AF and thatthe D800 is only good on a sturdy tripod.

You took some excellent images. Everyone has praised them.

As a 5D2 owner, I can sympathize, but as a D700 owner (I own both), it's hardly ground breaking technology.

Again, they are fabulouos captures. Well done.

I shoot a lot of softball with a 7D and 200 f/2.8L prime lens on a monopod and your images look considerably sharper and more detailed than mine. I'm not going to start a "my 7D images are soft" thread, but I have to say that I can take back-to-back shots where nothing changes in terms of settings or movement and one will be soft while the other is tack sharp. It's almost like some shots the 7D is on its game and on others it's taking a break or something.

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a 5D3 and when I see images like this it really looks to me like Canon has done a great job.

Thanks for sharing...excellent shots if you ask me!

Very nice. Very sharp and colorful.

Can't wait to try my 5D3 with some baseball pics, and compare them to my 7D pics.

These shots are good, but not great.

My impression so far is that the MkIII sensor is optimized for weddings, portraits, product. The autofocus is obviously up to the task, but the images lack the pop that benefits sports and is a 1D hallmark.

I was being somewhat sarcastic in my reply concerning the D800 comparisons considering that's what all the threads here are about lately. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
