Sigma 30mm arrived- tested on Nex 7 100% crops
Mar 30, 2012

Hi guys,
have to share this with you, sure didn't expect this lens to perform so well,

impressive from 2.8 to 11, sweet spot 4- 5.6, diffraction starts to be a factor at 11, @16 still usable, but barely, 22 destroys the image,
full size and 100% crops on my blog, don't hesitate to ask questions

Thanks for posting the tests it verifies the fact that my tests on the lens that arrived yesterday are correct and show top one third of the frame to be slightly out. I tested it like you did on a flat surface and compared it to four of the lenses at the same time. I'm sending it back and getting a replacement. The middle and bottom of my frame was extremely sharp at all apertures up to F16. thanks again.

thanks wll! Yes, I made that grip, took about 20min, just a piece of wood, cut and filed down, adds 1.5 oz and makes a hell of a difference! I am really hoping someone picks up this idea I had a while ago for a grip

Thanks for posting your test Mike. It's tests like yours and images posted by others that persuaded me to purchase the Sigma 30mm. I'm still waiting for it to ship. It appears this lens is a winner.

Mike,

There is a guy making wooden grips in China I believe, but a nice matching grip with room for an extra battery and SD card would be awesome for sure !

What would you say is the easiest way to check for decentering? Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

the most effective ( unscientific way i found is

a) put the camera on a tripod, use a level gauge to balance, set to infinity and shoot buildings at a distance (preferably parallel to the focal plane), one shot wide open, one fully stopped down

b) shoot a textured wall at approx 10 feet, make sure you are pretty much parallel to the surface, wide open and fully stopped down

import into ps and look for uneven border sharpness, its tricky on super wide angle lenses because of field curvature, but straight forward with standard wide/normal and tele lenses. If the lens shows a lot more blur on one side it has a bubu and needs to be returned
hope this makes sense

In reply to mike kobal, Mar 31, 2012

Thanks for posting your results. I just got the Sigma 30mm on Friday and went out shooting for the first time and I was astonished by how sharp the lens was across the full frame. Maybe I got lucky with my sample, but I literally couldn't see a difference between f2.8 and f5.6 at the center or corners at 100%. There was no decentering and I couldn't even find any chromatic aberration on the shots I took and the contrast was exceptional.

I thought both the kit lens and the Tamron 18-200mm were acceptably sharp around f8.0 but the Sigma 30mm has shamed both of those lenses regardless of aperture.

I can't wait to try out the Sigma 19mm that comes on Monday. Fingers crossed it shows the same quality. I've always shot high quality zooms like the Canon 25-105L or Nikon 24-120mm f4.0 but now I'm going to have to view even those lenses in a new light LOL.

I too am waiting for the 19mm now, had no interest when it first announced -too close to the 16mm pancake I already have but after seeing the image quality on the 30mm....

Sounds fantastic, particularly given the price. How's the bokeh? I think that would be my only reservation... well, that and I'd prefer a slightly wider angle, but can't have it all, I guess.

we can't have both (yet) bokeh and wide, esp on a APSC sized sensor, the Zeiss 24mm 1.8 is a bit wider with less impressive bokeh and since the 30mm is already sharp at 2.8 bokeh is really nice, impressive actually, I will post samples when I get a chance

I'm not thinking of "quantity" of bokeh, but quality. From what I've seen, the 24/1.8 has really good bokeh.

agree, for a wide angle, the 24mm has excellent bokeh, the Sigma doesn't lag far behind in bokeh, just price it is very good
