D800 Aurora
Mar 29, 2012

The day the new D800 arrived, I had the possibility to test the new camera nearby with some aurora shots. Very limited possibilities last night as clouds covered the whole sky only 1 hour after the shots. Not too much time to test, but the first impressions show a got step up in image quality compared to the D3/D700 generation cameras.

OMG, that is like so good it makes one smile over and over again looking at it.

You would need to be a Canon troller or a jealous Swedish guy to start bashing that one.

The sun shining at night? Don't think that's even possible. But fantastic image. The original must be super.

Many things are possible in Norway, but not midnight sun and aurora at the same time

We have a bit more than 5 weeks until midnight sun, but the nights are getting shorter now and there are only about 2 weeks again to see the auroras. Even if the moon is not full it shows up very bright at that long exposures.

I thought it might be.

Right now the Moon phase is not much more than a crescent. The image makes it look fully round, but I guess that is the result of over saturation of light compared to the exposure for the rest of the shot.

I am a Nikon shooter, D700, and I come in peace! : )

But is it just me or does this look a little noisy for ISO800? At first I thought it was ISO 3200 until I saw the EXIF data. I am awaiting my D800 and am looking forward to get out and do some similar style photography. Maybe my expectations are too high, but the darks in this image seem noisy when I enlarge the photo- definitely not as smooth as I would have hoped.

Juhu Thilo,

I know, I live 63 deg north. No way to see auroras in the middle of the summer... with sun being away for just 4 hours or so.

A really really cool image... yes, you were lucky too on this one.
