Yes, is made in Portugal, since 1973 Leica have there a camera factory. And is building a new one to replace the oldest in same location. You are a Leica connoisseur

Mine says Made in Germany on the back.

I believe the primary assembly is made in Portugal, then shipped to Germany where the precision-intensive and low tolerance parts are assembled (rangefinder mechanism for example). There is a video somewhere on the web about that.

More than 90% is made in Portugal. The camera say Made in Germany yes, but is not the complete true.

Here is a video for the curious, sorry without translation, but you can see some construction processes:

http://www.tvi24.iol.pt/sociedade/leica-fotografia-fabrica-famalicao-tvi24-ultimas-noticias/1335776-4071.html

Some numbers:

The plant had produced in the last year: 40.000 binoculars, 15.000 lens, 4.000 telescopic sights, 20.000 cameras.

The digital M9 have 1200 pieces for example.

In a magic cave deep under a secret mountain in the heart of Germany, by tiny gnomes, who also hand-forge the firmware with their little hammers. Why do you ask?

The EU regulations demand that for a product to carry the "Made In XXX" badge, only the final production steps need to be carried out in country XXX. So, stating "Made in Germany" on a Leica M9 is 100% in accord with EU regulations.

There are no gnomes in Germany. You must confuse us with another country. In Germany, everything is made by hand by well-trained, hard-working, effecient German craftsmen.
