It's cool and beat mine but I'm just happy with a nice score.

There is no doubt it can be done. I've had some #1's with no funny business and I think it happens in more challenges then not. It's just when it does happen people who try to play fair get upset. The good news is most dubious entrants don't win so it becomes less emotional then when it does affect the outcome.

Congrats, and well deserved. As Mike says, it can happen, but the percentage of people willing to lose face and win by shady means remains incredible to the point that it makes you wonder about the world of today's - and perhaps fear the world of tomorrow. And every day there's more and more of those "Lose Face - Use FB" kind of "winners" emerging. Go figure.

There is this funny character in "Whitewater" challenge who gave 55 half-stars and 11 single-stars as a whole of his voting contribution there.

You don't have to be a professional profiler to outine such a state of mind. What's actually hilarious about it, this case maybe has an ambition to be regarded as a "photographer"... totally unaware that this activity needs a totally opposite attitude in order to succeed. But since DPR does not supply any tools to deal with it the way it deserves, I have to watch and wait, hoping for the better days. And that part is sad.

Their goal isn't winning the challenge, it's beating the system. For any system that's put in place, some people will try to beat it just to beat it.

Trying to block the cheaters just makes for an arms race. Worse, it gives the cheaters even more incentive to try to beat the system by making it more of a challenge.

Thank you very much OldArrow.

In the "Whitewater" challenge I came in at #50 which to me was very fair as me average in only 40% if that.

We only hope that one day we will have better days ahead.

Hi,

I'm sorry that some ID***s spoiled our fun there by their dishonest votes; maybe you'd range better otherwise. Thanks for your contribution, anyway. Maybe the new system (if it uses the most of good suggestions offered here) helps the hosts get rid of the cheaters, at least in such percentage that it becomes futile.
Best Regards from Sunny Macedonia

Congratulations!!

I also had some success, so a good placement is possibly wihout cheating.

But it is so demotivating when obviously poor photos get high scores. For me as a host it is also very difficult to prove any cheating, but lets continue to contribute to fair and interesting challenges in the future!

It was nice to see in the recently completed Caution challenge, the "winner" was DQ'd.

I can only guess, but it was a very dull photo with a high number of "5" votes and a lot of middling to low votes. It had been posted by someone new to DPR who had only uploaded this and one other pic. So, my guess is vote rigging.

Even without facebook, voting manipulation can never be eliminated. How is it you think that some photographers manage to get a couple of fives or fours, on almost everyone of their photos even when some of them clearly don't deserve it. And we're talking about good photographers, that don't need to do this. Some people are very discreet and subtle and you can never prove it.

An Entrant can't be DQed for what you describe here as "vote rigging" . . . it's not against any rules on DPReview.

Well, I don't know. The challenge subject was "Caution." Here's the DQ'd photo...

Why do you thiink it was DQ'd?

I didn't say you were wrong, but I can't see any legitimate reason why it should be DQed . . . . if the reason it was DQed was the number of 5.0 votes then the Host has made a mistake and should fix his error.

If the Host doesn't want to allow vote soliciting he should add it to his Challenge rules . . .

Doesn't matter if you have the Voters ID . . . . no rules broken so how can there be a DQ ?

Unless I am misunderstanding your point ?

I think the only way to cheat on your own photo is to manipulate EXIF in order to make it eligible when it should not be. I guess you could also have multiple ID's so you could vote for it yourself. Lord only knows what drives people to do such foolish things as there is nothing to gain by winning.
