Hi all, I need to get a media card for my T3i. Under the specs of the camera, it says:

SD/SDHC/SDXC card, via external media (USB v.2.0 hard drive, or via Wireless LAN (Eye-Fi card*))

what exactly does Canon mean when it says "via external media (USB v.2.0 hard drive, or via Wireless LAN (Eye-Fi card*))"? does it mean I can plug in a USB hardrive into the camera and transfer the pictures onto it?

No.

Note on p. 210 of the instruction manual: "Even if the camera is conntected to a hard disk recorder with a USB cable, movies and still photos cannot be played or saved."

The camera can write files directly to the SD/SDHC/SDXC card installed.

It can also write them to a computer either via an installed Eye-Fi card or a USB connection. The computer acts as a "host" to control the data transfer from the "slave" camera.

Both the camera and USB hard drives are "slave" USB devices. Neither has the "master" or host abilities to enable data transfer between them.
