Photos using 100-400 4.5-5.6L IS with 2x extender
Feb 29, 2012

Does anyone have any photos using the 100-400 4.5-5.6L IS using a canon 2x teleconverter, either the II or III. I've been doing some wildlife shots and i just can't seem to get as close as i would like without spooking the wildlife. Cropping works but I'd like to see the differences between what I have that is cropped and something that still has all the pixels available to it. My cropped photos are really pushing the limit of the sharpness of the lens and they are getting close to showing pixelation.

What body are you using?

I use a 7D+100-400 occasionally with a Kenko 1.4x DGX; I own the original (Mk I) Canon 1.4 and 2x TC's also, but find I get better performance and equal IQ with the Kenko.

I tend not to use the 2x very often because it requires manual focus with the 7D (which is why I asked which body you're using), and if I'm shooting wildlife that doesn't want to stay still while I adjust focus manually, I tend to lose the shot

That said, when I've tested the 1-4 +2x TC on a tripod shooting a stationary subject, I've gotten sime good shots, but, with my eyesight, using manual focus can be a real crapshoot (no pun intended!).

Here are a couple of hawk in flight shots taken with the 7D, 100-400+Kenko 1.4x, cropped roughly 50%; I was testing the combination, taking shots of the hawk sitting on the roof of the house next door (about 150' away); he decided to take off, and I just kept shooting...I didn't really have time to set up for flight shots, but I think they worked out ok:

I'm ok with losing auto focus. I just need something with a little more reach without spending $10,000
