I went out to the South st bridge around sundown to wait for the right light. There was another photographer out there, he graciously let me use his tripod... thanks!

Lowpine,

I really enjoyed the Philly picture and love the City. My wife & I spent a week their a couple of years ago enjoying the sights, and historical places.
Mike

My shots were taken with the Pany G2 & 45-200 lens on a cloudy/overcast gray day. We have a rather large number of breeding pairs in the local area with a large number of accompanying juveniles I have counted 24 different juveniles in a five mile stretch along the river in the past few days.

Livermore CA Buildings
In reply to lowpine, Feb 25, 2012

On the road working in Livermore this past week. Went downtown and checked out some of the old buildings. Regrettably it was overcast most days and never got much good sun.

Here is one of the Carnegie Libraries (in a small square named 'Carnegie Park' of course). Built in 1911, currently used as a museum.

St Michael's Church. Not as old as it looks - built in 1918 - but in an older Mission style. The good thing is that the surrounding area is still mostly 1-story structures, allowing you to see the bell towers from a fairly long way off.

Adorned with beautiful blue domes and a classic red tile roof.

Thanks for looking.

Corroded Metal
In reply to lowpine, Feb 25, 2012

From the naked eye and to the touch, this metal feels perfectly smooth, but my G2 brings out a lot of texture (and colour) you wouldn't see otherwise.

Rainy Days ..
In reply to lowpine, Feb 25, 2012

A bit earlier than usual for this thread & I miss SLOtographer's intro ..

It's been a busy week with work for me. I only had a chance to go for a short walk & the rain started to pour soon after I got there. So I tried to focus on conveying the atmosphere. Had to rely on the camera's histogram and the len's IS as I didn't really feel comfortable fiddling around & setting up my tripod in the rain. C&C Welcome!

No it's fine. Stan is too much of a gentleman to take offence...but tonight when it's dark he'll be waiting for you with his big ol' rusty meat cleaver.

Actually these days Stan prefers a slightly smaller rusty meat cleaver. It's got about 90% of the chopping power of the big ol' rusty meat cleaver but it's pocketable and much lighter to carry around for long periods.

Philly, but not Skyline
In reply to lowpine, Feb 25, 2012

Another bit of shooting in the city earlier this week:

First, a basic scenic shot - I've lived near Philly for about 20 years now and walked by the "business entrance" of the old colonial era Pennsylvania hospital countless times. And somehow had NEVER managed to walk around the corner onto the side street on which the old part of the hospital and the old grand entrance (no longer open) is located. I stumbled onto it this week and was just sort of flabbergasted that I'd never managed to see it despite being within a half a block of it possibly a hundred tines? This is where John Adams and Ben Franklin and many of the other founding fathers used to go when seriously ailing. Anyway, here it is:

A ped-bridge just off of 30th St station:

And some street shots:

An old street-shooting trick just rediscovered - while you watch your subject out of the corner of your eye, state intently into the distance straight ahead of you. When he turns to see just what in blazed your LOOKING at, you snap the photo. I'm pretty sure that's what happened on this one.

That second one is really nice (nothing wrong with the first either BTW). The wet rocks in the foreground and the raindrops so obvious in the shot really establish the mood and the composition really pulls you into the shot.
