Will we see a Super Rebel or Rebel X for Canon's 75th anniversary?
Feb 22, 2012

This is the year of the "X" camera. 1dX, powershot G1x, etc.

Being that it is the 75th anniversary of Canon, will we be seeing a Rebel X? What do you think will be in it?

Canon EOS-1D

It illustrates we may hear of a new Rebel announcement soon, and of a newer 18-135 EF-S lens that has a more silent AF function, for video. It wouldn't be too far of a stretch to then suggest Canon may have improved the Contrast Detect AF capability of the new Rebel, as well.

That would be the main improvement I would think Canon needed to focus on (no pun intended)...

And I hope they take a lesson from Sony and make the cameras capable of continuous autofocus in video mode. Until then, I'll only use my Canon for stills.

No, last year was the year of the "X" camera. X100, X10, X-S1, GX1, HX9V/HX100V, etc. Canon just copied the other brands and put an X on their most egregiously overpriced niche models to make people think they have the same mystical powers as last year's X cameras.

Sony uses SLT for AF, I don't see Canon going with that design.

Usually around this time rumors about Canon reach a fever pitch. I've heard too about an announcement on the 28th of this month. I guess everybody's already pretty happy with the cams they have and with that degree of market saturation nobody's too excited about what comes next.

It'd be nice if they did something more than a warm-over for a "super" edition.

Yes, I'm content, but that is not the reason for the lack-luster response to your thread. Canon only release gradual evolution rather than a dramatic leap in technology. Sooner or later, everyone WISE UP to canon's method and curb their enthusiasm.

  • Canon 15mp T1i is handicapped by 1080p @20fps, and no MIC input

  • Canon T2i, is just a T1i with 1080p @30fps + MIC input + increase to 18mp

  • Canon T3i, is just a Canon T2i + Articulating LCD + Wireless Flash

Canon T4i will be yet another evolution warm-over. You will NOT see a dramatic jump in capability. It will not have the new AF from 7d. If you really want a super-rebel, you're better off buying a Canon 60d : (1) faster FPS (2) huge viewfinder (3) better egro. (4) larger buffer, etc....

Remember, canon isn't interested in cannibalization 60d/7d's sales. Whatever Canon T4i may be....it will be inferior to a 60d. That is just how canon rolls. A subtle reminder to force you to upgrade.
