Pentax K5 and 40mm "pancake" ?

I'm thinking of this lens as my first prime with the K5 - anyone have this combo and still like it? I don't know if it's a 'novelty' lens or would be useful - the 40mm (60mm FF equiv) may be a little odd for someone used to a 35mm SLR & 50mm?

Just a matter of habitude, and of learning to use another focal lenght. Naturally, you will alwise wine after the 35mm - FF, but life is hard =)! I shoot very often with the 40 2.8 Limited on my K-5/K-7, it´s a terrific combo, in IQ, and in portability. Just go for it!
You can look at my stream, where are many pics shot with the 40mm 2.8 Ltd:

It all depends upon your shooting style. I was attracted to the 40mm Ltd by its size but was warned that it might not be wide enough and in the event I bought the 35 2.8 macro which I use in conjunction with the 21mm Ltd. Having used the 35mm Ltd for a year, I am glad that I did go for the 40mm.

I have the combo and enjoy it. I do also have the 21 and 70. I enjoy the set. I have taken all three with 2 bodies so both myself and my Wife can enjoy clicking the shutter at the same time.

I have the 21 and the 40, and the 21 gets used much, much more. The 40 has excellent image quality and is tiny, but it's a little too long for a general purpose use IMO.

It really depends on what you are shooting and how close you want to get. I used a friends for shooting another friends concert. LOVED the handling, and the rendering was superb. At least on my K200d.

http://LloydShell.zenfolio.com/jasonhewlett/e8f6013b

that one through #50 were all taken with the 40. Loved the flare characteristics and the speed of focusing. It is just FAST!!!!

Really can't go wrong with any limited as long as you are proficient at shooting primes instead of zooms.

I often use the 43 as a general walk about lens and do not find it to be that constricting.

Thanks, I was scared to death to shoot it, I had never done anything like that before. Jason is a very good friend and I didn't want to take his money if I couldn't do the gig right.

That would make a nice pair. I use a K24mm f2.8 and either a K50mm f1.4 or my DFA100mm f2.8 WR Macro as a walk around downtown street shooting duo.

I am hoping to see a WR 24mm f2.0 sometime in the next couple of years, matching my DFA 100. Though I have to admit that the DA 21 is looking more enticing every month....

The DA40 seems to be somewhat of a polarizing lens in terms of people's viewpoints; most who try it seem to either love or dislike the field of view, but not so many are ambivalent. I'm in the "love it" category.

For quite a few sorts of photographs, lens focal length isn't all that important; and the DA40 of course works fine for most of those, as do a great many other lenses. For social snapshots, particularly of one or a few people, the DA40 very much shines. For larger group photos or urban architecture or near-macro closeups, on the other hand, it stinks.

In my opinion, one of the nicest things about the lens is that it has no significant optical difficulties or "bad" settings to worry about. You can point it at something, near or far, and use any aperture setting, and get at least a decent photograph. Some other lenses that are generally quite good have certain settings or combinations of settings that are best avoided or used with care—perhaps the edges aren't so sharp at close focus distances and large apertures, or longitudinal chromatic aberrations are a problem, or autofocus is sometimes a bit slow and iffy. The DA40 may not always be the absolute best at all settings, but it never performs badly and is very often excellent.

Yeah I love this combo.

Small and light, (fits in a coat pocket), and if you're one of those who think that a 50mm prime is too long on an APS-C body then this fits the bill perfectly.

It's usually all I take on holidays for my snapshots.

wow, beautiful stuff! well between this & the concert pics above it looks like this would be a very useful lens. Plus all the B&H reviews are positive (4.9 out of 5) and for the relatively inexpensive price it seems to be a "must have"

I love my K5 with the DA40. It is incrediblly sharp, no CA, and looks so cool on the K5.

I find the focal length to be prefect for many situations.

The K-01 40mm coming out
In reply to David Bourke, Feb 22, 2012

I just ran across that on B&H as I was about to order the DA40. I imagine they took the DA40 optics and put it in their "slick design" model for the K-01? I imagine I can just use the DA40 on a K-01 if I get one in the future, but the K-01 version of the 40mm didn't seem like it would be right on a K5 (it looks really tiny!)

Personnally, I intend to buy it (it's dirt cheap!!) and use it on my K-5! It does work on the K-5 and apparently, results are very similiar to the DA40...but it's much smaller!

This is the ideal extra lens you can bring with you, even if you don't have the space!

BTW, I wonder if it's the smallest APS-C lens in the world (probably)
