Tamron 18-200mm E-mount Pano & Blurred image is to be solved
Feb 15, 2012

Hi,

Just thought I would update users who have the Tamron 18-200mm E-mount lens.

Two 'glitches' have been found when using the lens -
the lack of full support for panorama shots
the occasional blurred image on shutter lag

I contacted Tamron about both issues and received the following email back. Looks like both issues will be sorted in March by firmware - though how this will be applied is another issue?

Dear Mr Wells,

Thank you for your emails to our Service Dept. about the Tamron 18-200mm lens you recently purchased for your Sony NEX-7 camera.

I have passed your issues on to the Service Manager at Tamron Europe in Germany and he has come back with the following information:

The operation of VC (image stabilisation) in this lens does not currently allow Panorama shooting with this lens on the NEX-7 camera. It will be necessary to update the firmware in the lens to solve the problem and this will be ready by end of March. The blurred photo issue is also related to the VC and this will be solved at the same time.

We apologise that you are experiencing these teething problems, but rest-assured that the problem is being addressed and you will not have to endure them for much longer as there will be a solution soon.
Best regards,
Keith Ruffell.

Interestingly I just spoke with Tamron USA and they are unaware of any issues with the lens or any firmware updates. I asked about the Pano issues and the rep said they had received an email from a customer on that issue, tested the lens, and found it to work as advertised. They were unaware of any lag/focus issues ans were unaware of any firmware update.

I then asked if there was a method to apply an update to an existing lens (if the update existed) or would it just be for new production lenses. The rep seemed knowledgeable and stated she was unaware of any firmware update to any lenses and that was something that Tamron hadn't ever done for existing lenses.

My NEX-7 arrives tomorrow with a couple of lenses including the Tamron. At this point I'm not sure if I should test it out to see what I find or just return it until the dust settles on all of this.

Guys, I am just curious, why did you buy the Tamron over the Sony?

It will be done through Sony ...

Size and Price.

I have noticed both of those problems, no pano and more blurred photos than normally. l

Hope they will solve those, lens is great otherwise.

Performance is nearly the same, minus the panoramic feature and the black Tamron looks a ton better on the 7 than the Sony.

Since the pano and focus issues obviously exist Tamron needs to know about it so they can be fixed. As far as they know the lens is 100% compatible with the NEX-7. If you can document the issues with Tamron it might be worthwhile letting them know about it so they can work on a fix.

Sorry, but what is the use of having a pretty looking lens if you can't take a proper photo.

size & price, mainly size. Tamron's much smaller in practice & is $200 cheaper than Sony over here in Asia

Same problem though Kevin, if you can't take an auto pano the way it is supposed to do it's not a good deal even for $200 less. I would prefer to save up a bit longer and get a lens of better quality, that works the way it was designed to.

Lastly I don't know but I am more interested in the photos my camera produces not so much on how it looks. Black lens, silver lens, doesn't mean anything to me.

Where is the Pano issue documented? I'd like to see some samples of what the issue is since I have one being delivered today.

Thanks

If you do a search, you should find ample examples. Here's when I first reported the issue:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1042&message=40251038

If you have good light which brings the 100% auto settings to higher shutter speeds, the problem will be lessened or eliminated. This is why some people say that it works just fine...they had enough light.

But with less than ideal light, the camera defaults to 1/60s which will 100% of the time cause the image to be blurred.

Everyone that buys mirrorless is looking size and weight...also looks are very important to most folks, why would you say that about your camera?

The Tamron is a great lens and takes excellent photos...I can count ALL the panoramas in my computer (Out of 40,000 photos) on two hands...lol...

The Tamron lens doesn't creep the Sony does:
