Please Post photos shot with olly 12mm 2f
Feb 14, 2012

hey guys please can you post some photos and thoughts on the 12mm lens... i went to the camera shop today so i could compare the 14mm pancake i already own with the 12mm.... i fell in love with its feel and manual focus ring. i prefer the focal length and the images seem sharper.... (i ve attached a casual photo i took in the shop with the 14mm and the 12mm.) but at 600 smackers i am finding it very hard to justify... i think if i do buy this lens it will be on my camera 75% of the time but even so that is so much money.

anyway, please post away with your images and experiences of the 12mm.

24mm equivalent is a 'magical' fov. I have nothing to back it up, just that I've heard it oft-repeated, and have come to believe and see it myself.

A 28mm equivalent fov does not have the magic to it.

I can see $600 between those casual captures.

Buy the lens!

Hmmm, the 14mm shot looks sharper to me than the 12mm shot. The 14 had a slightly faster shutter speed.

even in that small web size i can tell the 12mm is sharper. $600 sharper?? meh... Ive got to play with the lens at a local shop and its a nice lens. Well built and the AF the AF is very fast and silent.

If you want a wide angle lens for....lets say....landscapes....I would take a look at the reviews for the SLR magic 12mm 1.6. Its sharper vs the 12 F2(per reviews).

I am not sure why but the 12 shot was better exposed. I am surprised though that 1/600 vs 1/800 made the shadow areas that much brighter. I just wonder if there is something else going on with the glass quality? I too am considering the 12 and you are right, it is not cheap. Normally you get what you pay for though.

Good luck!

here is one, shot RAW:

+++

and here is one taken from the same position with a Canon 1Ds3 + Zeiss 21/2.8, similar time of year and time of day, shot RAW, same postprocessing workflow:

+++

and another one where some CA is visible (corrected to max of Lightroom 3 capability) on contrasty edges. Blown highs on top left half is typical of GH-1 sensor.

+++

overall very pleased, with slight negative mark for CA, but to balance super performance with regards to flare.

Cheers, Vittorio

I've had the Panny 14 and currently have the Olympus 12 (which I used for this photo). I have to say I strongly prefer the Olympus.

It is certainly a sharp lens and. of course, has great depth of field [which you may or may not want.]

I really like my Oly 12 f2. I don't shoot people, cats or dogs with mine, but it's great to take out into the field. It's small, light and very sharp. I also have the panny 14. In my opinion that lens just does not compare when it comes to overall image performance and total image sharpness. The Oly 12 is just as nice wide open as it is stopped down a little bit which makes it great for changing light conditions in the mountains. I also have the Oly 9-18, but the 12 f2 is the one that I usually reach for. Have a few shots from last Summer and Fall

Brian

Natural. It just seems to be a thing with the lens -- must be the combination of diaphragm/glass who-knows-what? It was just a pleasant surprise when I saw it.

Beautiful, rich, moody and intense!

And probably enough to push the Olympus 12mm f/2.0 above the Panasonic 7-14mm f/4.0 and to the top of my next-buy list.
