46MP Sigma SD1 Merrill £1700 ....... vs D800
Feb 14, 2012

Sigma SD1 Merrill with sensor of 46MP
With it's magical Foveon sensor

http://digitaljournalofphotography.blogspot.com/2012/02/sigma-ceo-defends-sd1-merrill-price.html

Set up company price Jpy 200,000 is less than £1700
usually market price will be lower than company set up price

Will it compete against D800 (£2300 ish)

Note:

IMHO, the 36MP on D800 is RGGB, so it should be multiplied by 1/3 or less for each color. The true color of 12MP, against true color of 15MP on SD1 Foveon

Magical is not the word I'd use.

Yes, exactly

For them already bought the $6900 they will get some kind of compensation, says Kazuto Yamaki

D800 is 36MP on white, 18MP on green and 9MP on red & blue and SD1 is 15MP on all. Take a look at the Comparometer on Imaging-Resource. Most likely D800E images will look very close to Pentax 645D. SD1 is good on low ISO and red but that's all....

No competition.
In reply to rondhamalam, Feb 14, 2012

You're getting a 15MP ( I don't care how much they scream 46 MP) APS-C camera with poor high ISO noise (e.g. 800 or maybe 1600 max) performance. Focusing system is nowhere near Nikon D800. You're stuck with consumer grade lenses. No live view. No video. And like others have said...nothing really magical about the foveon sensor (except in the eyes of a foveon fanboy).

Can only take, as far as I know, Sigma lenses, and not a full frame sensor

No.
15mp X 3 capture layers is still 15mp. And that's just resolution.
It's APS-C. Actually, it's slightly smaller than APS-C.
11 (?) AF points, and likely not as sensitive as Nikon's -2EV
Slow processor

Sigma only lenses. (Not a bad thing as Sigma has some good lenses, but, with Nikon one can use Sigma lenses in addition to Tamron, Tokina, and.... Nikon).

If one is thinking about a D800 but like the SD1 Merril due to price, I would just look at a D7000 or D700. Other wise there is no comparison between the D800 & SD1. And if you ever want to take even 1 second of video of your kids or a UFO or whatever, the SD1 won't help either.

Sometimes people actually want low ISO performance instead of high. Even though the Sigma DP1 was only produced a native 4.x MP image, it resolved as well as most 12 MP Bayer sensors. So take your choice, color interpolation or spatial resolution interpolation. Both are going to be fairly similar in the end.

The Foveon sensor is likely going to be less demanding on the glass to get sharp images, doesn't require any sort of AA filter, and won't show false colors from moire.

I agree, it is misleading to call the Sigma 45 MP, but it is misleading to call the Nikon 36 MP too, because pixels are something that don't exist in sensors. If you were to make a 45 MP image out of the Sigma camera you would have to interpolate spatial resolution, and to make a 36 MP image from the Nikon, you have to interpolate color resolution. So take your pick.

Well, it does natively produce a 15 MP image, but both companies are wrong to say their sensors have pixels. That is a function of an image, not a sensor. The Foveon is going to resolve as well as a Bayer sensor with more MP. The Nikon has monochromatic pixels where the Bayer has RGB.

It's APS-C. Actually, it's slightly smaller than APS-C.

It is APS-C, the older Foveon sensors were 1.7x, this new one is close to 1.5x. I will say at low ISO I liked the images from the DP1 I had. However, the DP1 had this annoying color shift near the edges of the frame. I think that has been all resolved now.

I just like having the additional choice. I think if the Sigma had launched at this price people would have been a lot warmer to it.

I agree, it is a poor comparison to the D800 for many people, but will be a good alternative for some. It would be interesting to see which makes better low ISO landscape prints, but the bottom line is both will likely be good.

I can get outstanding 40" x 60" prints with my 12MP D300 and D2X.

My point is, the resolution reality is the D800 will be significant improvement.

The Sigma comes out to 14 to 15MP per color, and then the Sigmas have an error to the larger size, so more like 18 - 19MP would be a realistic equivalent.

I think the D800 will have better printable resolution than the Sigma.

When I get my D800, I will be happy to put the rubber to the road and test it out if you want to play.

I've seen a user who uses Canon and Sigma, he managed to put his Canon lenses on a SD1. Must be possible for F-mount too.

Have you seen this images from the SD1? Terrific!
