Best 3rd party flash for nex-7?
Feb 10, 2012

Hi!

Just ordered a nex-7 and am wondering if anyone has had a good experience with a 3rd party flash on it??

I'm looking for something about equivalent to the Sony HVL-F43AM ($350) but hopefully less expensive. I have to have both tilt and swivel!

Thanks!

I just ordered this Bower cheapie from B&H for my NEX-7. I wanted something but have never been much of a flash person. I figure you can't go wrong for $39!

It's got good reviews, considering its price...

It's a fully manual flash. I know it's cheap but I'd rather pay $60 more and get something with TTL metering.

And I'm not a flash person either ;P

Thanks for the suggestions...

len004, the Vivitar sounds pretty close to what I want. Thanks!

sfoskett, I think the Bower is a little shy of features. Can't complain too much though at that price! I mostly use a flash in some sort of bounce mode, and I don't think this one has enough power to fill the bill. Thanks, and good luck with it.

Has anyone had success with any of the YongNuo flashes?

I've two Yongnuos (460II-M/S1/S2, 467-TTL/M/S1/S2), they work well with NEX - but without TTL (467 TTL for Canon), I do not need, they have 7 steps of power, also work 1A as slaves. Triggered by flash or wireless. Price $46 and $75

Well, that is what I am trying to avoid paying for! Surely there is a 3rd party unit that is less than $350.

Thanks, though.

If you only want a (smallish) bounce flash, there is the HVL-F20AM. Less than $150, have seen it already below $100, briefly.

Unlike the Nex-5 version, it has its own batteries.

Hi, Henry:

First, it doesn't swivel but does rotate upward. Second, it is a little weak for my normal usage. The way I shoot with flash, this little unit won't fill the bill I'm afraid. I wish it would for that price!! 8(

Thanks so much though.

Why not the Nissin Di622 which is definitely quite keenly priced and has TTL? I had used this with my previous system - Canon - and found it to work well. But personally I have the HVL-F43AM, which is excellent because of its superior swivelling mechanism; one of the reasons I sold up on my Canon, and bought into Sony.

Ok, how does the swivel thingie work on the f43AM? I read about it, but cannot imagine how it works. I know it will swing up and from side to side, just like my 580EX II's but beyond that I can't figure it out...

thanks,

Darn, Canon version $140, Sony version $220+shipping/tax. Might as well buy the F43AM.

"Bounce flash: 90° right, 90° left, 150° up, 8° down"

That's the swivel~

Another thread on this forum answered my question about the head adjusting for both horizontal and vertical shots. The second image shows it well.

I must say, I have never seen a flash like that!

I should've bought the F43AM when it was $280 sold directly by Amazon. Now it's $350 everywhere. D'oh.

Will the Canon TTL flashes work with TTL in the Nex 7?

That is quite expensive, considering it costs £112 in the UK for the Mk 2 version of Di622 (on eBay), which is significantly less than the HVL-F43AM; but I personally would prefer the HVL-F43AM even factoring its cost as it is so much more versatile - its swivel mechanism, its ability to be wireless controller of other Sony flashes with ratio control.
