Winter Wildlife (many photos)
Feb 5, 2012

While out hiking, I had a chance to photograph some wildlife. These were shot with the Takumar 200mm F3.5 Preset.

The first wildlife for the day was a small group of juvenile Mule Deer bucks. Two had already lost their antlers

Later I saw a large group of Bull elk in the distance and started hiking towards them. As I got closer, I seen that there were a few coyotes wandering among the herd. This made the herd nervous, so I wasn't able to approach them as close as I usually do.

Later on in the day, towards sunset, I saw another herd of bull elk and I was able to get a little closer. I didn't spend much time trying to get closer, since the sun was setting and I only had a light pair of gloves on (hands were getting pretty numb trying to hold onto the camera :))

This bull elk was by the side of the road as I headed home this evening

Hope you enjoyed the photos!

What's this? Someone using a camera on this forum!

Excellent series, 4" snow overnight here and everything's stopped.

Very nice images. In the image that shows the coyote wandering around with the elk I think the coyote should be the one that is nervous.

Not just enjoyed, 'Loved them'!

Excellent series, lovely exposure and excellent sharpness, not mention great colours and contrast.

Once again, it is the man and not the gear.....

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it!

I really like using these old manual Takumars. I rarely use anything else (I only have 1 "modern" lens).

I recently bought this lens for $60.00 and it has become my favorite out of all the lenses I have. It is extremely sharp wide open and with 18 blades has wonderful bokeh.

Even if I could afford "nice" glass, I'm still not sure I would give up my Takumars for them

Some very nice capture there, well done. Perfect exposure, which is not easy on snow. Tx for sharing these great images.

Your pictures are a delight. I especially like the one with the coyote and the next one with the elk walking through the deep snow because they show the elk in their element.

Aren't Takumar lenses great? I love mine, though my longest is a SMC 135 f/3.5.

I have enjoyed many of your recent postings with Takumar lenses and look forward to more.

Being able to get out into the natural world like that is its own reward, but when you can bring back great photos of its inhabitants like you have, well, that makes it very special. BTW, those are healthy looking elk -- good to see.

Wow, great photos. And only 200mm?? How close did you have to get to the deer?

I can usually get within 20 ft. or so with the mule deer if I take my time. Elk I can get as close as 50-80 ft. before they start getting concerned.

It sometimes takes a couple of hours for the animals to get used to my presence, and when they do, I can sometimes even walk among the herd at will.

Very rarely I can even get deer use enough to me that they will allow me to pet them, but that only happens when I am around the deer for an extended period.
