A lifetime mission
Jan 30, 2012

In Akko there is an amazing synagogue built by the Jews who came From Tunisia. The building was started in the mid fifties of the 29th century, but what makes it unique is the decorations inside. This is the passion and project of one man, now in his late eighties, who set out to cover the four building with mosaic pictures telling the history of the Jewish people, and showing the land of Israel. During the years the building had more stories so that more walls could be covered by millions and millions of small stones. All the stones are from Israel, and all are natural and not coloured, so that some colours were very hard to find and are very rare.

The man managed to get some of the greatest mosaic artists and they got caught up in his enthusiasm and have worked on 4 story the building for over 60 years.

Here are a few examples of what one mans determination can achieve:

The outside doesn't really prepare you to what goes on inside:

one of the smaller halls, used for praying during the weekdays and for learning:

staircases

The holy arks. The Tunisian Jews had a tradition of having seven arks and not one. Each of these has two large silver doors, each weighing 120 kilos, and crafted by hand. work on the doors has been going on for thirty years, and there are still quite a few to make before the project is finished. The doors have different subjects, some remember the holocaust, some honour the IDF and the soldiers who gave their life for their country.

walls of the main prayer hall:

The central candelabra and skylight dome

panorama of a floor showing the flora and fauna of Israel:

and finally the unbelievably lively old man, who's dream and drive have created all this, speaking enthusiastically about his 'baby'

The incarnation of 'when there is a will there is a way'!

all taken by my LX5, and there are plenty mor, this is just a glimpse.

Great shots of a beautiful tradition. Mosaic work like that is unbelievably difficult, I cannot imagine how much work from master craftsmen all those walls (and floors! and ceilings!) took.
