Doesn't recognize the lens. Wonder if there is a Sigma firmware update?

The more posts I see baout the FT-1, the more I don't want it
In reply to burtmann, Dec 31, 2011

Besides, the important thing for me is to keep my V1 setup as small as possible. If I want to go big, I have another camera for that.

that is too bad! I was thinking of trying it with the 50-500mm. I asked Sigma if their lenses would work with FT1 or are AF-S equal, but no reply yet.

My 150-500 isn't recognised either, but the following Sigma EX lenses all work fine.

150mm f2.8 macro,
180mm f3.5 macro
70-200mm f2.8 EX DG
500mm f4.5 EX DG
800mm f5.6 EX DG

Since the 150-500 is the newest of my sigma lenses and the only one with OS I wonder if this is the issue

Have any of you guys tried it with other Sigma lenses like the 24mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.4? Do they work?

FT1+Sigma 50-150?
In reply to dave, Jan 5, 2012

Thank you very much Dave. The information is very helpful. Do you know if the FT-1 would work with the Sigma 50-150mm?

Many thanks again.

Sorry I've no experience with this lens, but all my non OS Sigma HSM lenses work fine including the 12-24mm

has any one tried the 50-500 EX OS? it could be that the V1 doesn't recognise the chips in these newer OS lenses.

Have you tried the 70-200mm f2.8 with TC?

Also, doesn't the 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG have OS?

There have been at least 5 versions of the sigma 70-200 f2.8 with HSM there was a D vesion which gave distance data then 2 DG versions which simply indicated they were digitally optimised, the latter of these focussed down to 3ft the former to 6ft.

Only the latest EX DG HSM has OS.

My version is the third version it works fine on the D700 and for all practical purposes is as good as my Nikon 70-200 VR11.

On the V1 + FT it is not quite so good at full aperture , it focuses fine but is soft , sharpens up acceptably with USM, By f4 it is fine. However when i tried it with the Sigma 1.4x EX converter the results were very soft and not really acceptable 'till f5.6 (f8 with converter). So i would not use my version with any converters. Later version may be better.

I got the V1 and the FT -1 Yesterday. I've tried my Sigma 120-300 (older non OS version), with and without a 1.4 convertor and it worked just fine- The performance felt just as good as it did on my D200.

The only issue I have had (& have exactly the same on the D200) is that when the batttery gets low the AF struggles to drive the focus motor on the lens, where as swap to a 70-300mm VR or teh 18-200VR and it will work ok with a low battery.

Same here with my FT1 and Sigma 150-500. I'm not sure what the compatibility issues are with Sigma and Nikon. The lens works perfectly fine on my D700 and D3000.

As for other Sigma lens compatibly, my 24 f/1.8 and 105 f/2.8 macro lenses work fine as does an old 28-105 (mid-90s vintage lens). Then again, the 24 doesn't register on my D7000 so it's really a crap shoot.

Thank you very much Dave! This is very helpful. Seems that only OS lenses from Sigma are problematic for the FT-1.

There is no shortage of good reasons not to buy a Sigma 150-500 if mine's anything by which to judge...

I went into a photo store in germany and tried some sigma lenses with the staff there.

I can confirm that all of the non OS HSM sigma lenses we tried that worked. Only OS HSM lenses were not recognized. It is apparently a problem with sigma's stabilizer.

The guy at the photo store then did something interesting: He tried a Tamron lens. and said that in difference with sigma, tamron would have licensed the VR stabilizer from Nikon. And guess what: Even if the aperture of the tamron lens was 6.3, it worked fine with the ft1.

However, it seems with apertures of 6.3, the nikon v1 has some problems with focusing and the af hunts much.

As for sigma, it seems to be purely an OS problem. Someone should tell this to sigmas serivce. Perhaps they can modify their firmewares and upgrade their OS mechanism....

Hi Benni1234,

Many thanks for the information. Could you please let us know what type of non-OS HSM Sigma lenses that you have tried?

Many thanks,

Thanh
