Excerpts from an S2 comparative test (Summarit 2.5/35mm )

Summarit 35mm turned to be an amazingly sharp lens. I mean, AMAZINGLY. This is the same shot, just a 100% crop. It looks like it was shot with a studio flash, that's kind of sharpness one can find on f/11 shots done with a tripod mounted camera. This one, however, was handheld at f/2.5. Go Leica!

Irakly,

You're going to get me in trouble with my wife...

Btw, on an unrelated note, the iPhone thinks "Irakly" should be corrected to "Orally"

Cheers,
-raaj

Re: OK, you have convinced me

Times square is a place where photographers are constantly having their free lunch. So, I wasn't surprised to see a couple of guys with Nikons shooting something totally important. Both of them had two speedlight flashes: one on-camera and another one on the side. I also had a flash. It was in my camera bag and I never had to take it out. Later at home I realized that batteries were not there anyway

That really is a seriously tasty piece of kit. I can see what you mean about it having a different look to the M system. Funnily enough the colours in this shot remind me more of the Noct .95

Nice

Just to be a nuisance, I wish the lights weren't so washed out.

S3 perhaps.

No, I don't think that S3 would a solution here. No camera in the world can handle 14 stops difference. The only way to do it is to use additional lighting, which wasn't the idea here. This picture was taken as a part of a test of the S2 abilities to deal with available light.

Irakly, how about that! Come to think about it, I think the lens is way too sharp for female-portraiture (I dislike freckles).

Hmmm....

While I agree that the image you have posted is lovely, I feel that the M9 can perform comparably......

Here's a shot of the M9 and summarit, full size jpg (sorry for the huge shot). I have seen some remarkable work with the S2, but the crop there was a bit underwhelming to me, maybe due to lower light....

THe Summarit is quite sharp, but so is an M9 with 75 APO Cron....feel free to knock me off my pedestal

Re: Hmmm....

underwhelmed in what way?

this is not about sharpness of the lens. rather, it is about a night handheld shot that looks like it was shot with a flash, as it has no motion blur whatsoever.

nobody is going to dispute that a portrait lens renders skin better than a wide angle

couldn't agree more: this lens is not for portraits. although, i want to ask you a question: do you think it is actually a portrait? :)))

Re: Hmmm....

Good point. Well taken...speaking of good portrait lenses, I have a 85 sonnar on the way, and read your review at B&H, which helped to convince me, along with Sean Reid's take....

By the way, I do appreciate all of the work that you do and share with us....
