Does anyone have the 20mm and 14mm lens and use both much?
Dec 4, 2011

Still debating which GF3 kit to get, I already have the 20mm pancake lens so I'm thinking to just get the 14-42mm kit but it works out that i'll get the 14mm lens for about £100 if i go for the twin lens kit. Its quite a good saving, I'm just wondering if I'll end up using both much, I appreciate that they are very different FOV I'm just wondering, does anyone have both and use both much?

I first bought a pen E-P2 with 14-42 kit lens and later added the 20 and 14. Since then, the kit 14-42 sits in the drawer (not that it's not good or anything).

I use the 14 for walkaround (more and more) and the 20 if I get closer to people or in darker places.
I use the 20 for ambiental portraits and 14 for everything else.

Mind you, I also have a Canon FD 50 1.4 and the old Zuiko 70-300 with a panasonic adapter but they are more specialised and I don't take them out often.

I can't say if the 14 is better than the 14-42 at 14mm but I just decided I want a prime pancake.

I have the 20mm and kit 14-42mm, along with a 50mm Canon FD. I never use the kit lens but will probably pick up the 14mm pancake now it can be found for £150. The size, speed and sharpness advantages over the kit appeal to me, and the FOV and quicker AF appeal over the 20mm. I think a lot of people use it, or the 12mm Olympus with the 20mm or 25mm and often the 45mm too. I really like the prime lenses though.

Oh yeah, I forgot about AF speed. The 14 is really fast!
The 2.5 aperture doesn't hurt either..

I have both, and I tend to use the 14mm more. The 20mm lens is reserved for when I need the extra speed for photographing people in low light, for concerts, and so on.

My comparison of the tow lenses here:

Does anyone has suggestion of lens to use when I want to take picture with "big faces" but I cannot get close to the object? I think 5m or more is needed. I am using GF2

Yes, in that case, get the Lumix G 100-300mm f/4-5.6.

In the shorter end of the zoom range, you can take headshot portrait photos at around 5 meters. For even longer distances, you can zoom in to the longer end, but keep in mind that you will need a fast shutter speed to avoid camera shake.

Anyone fancy posting some of their favourite pictures taken with the 14mm? I'm always tempted by the size, but not so much, the focal length!

Can't you just surf one over to eBay and have a look, rather than asking someone else to do it for you and report back? Seems like the quicker and easier way to me.

That's pretty much what I do. The 20 is great, it's my walk around lens. When I want something wider I put the 14 on.

I think they're both excellent lenses. I know some say the 14 is not as good as the 20. That may be true. But if the 20 is an outstanding lens, the 14 is a very, very good one. I think you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in general use.

Same as what I do - 20mm is walk around and 14mm for when I need wider.

Just love the 35mm equiv 40mm length - its perfect - along with the 1.7 its ideal.

For example I recently took a short trip for a family event where I knew I'd be taking lots of indoor photos of groups and small groups. The 14 and the 20 were the only lenses I brought along.
