50mm f/1.4G vs 50mm f/1.8G
Nov 23, 2011

Is the increase cost of the 50mm f/1.4G worth the cost over the the 50mm f/1.8G.

I have watch several review (digitalrev.com for My Nikon D300s. The 50mm f/1.4G cost is about $439 and the cost on the 50mm f/1.8G is about $219.

Use of the lens is general use and portrait. I'm not getting paid for my work, but do enjoy taking good photo. Give your feed back.

Thanks

I have the 1.8 lens and it's a wonderful lens for the price--really! Sorry, I can't compare it to the 1.4 which I don't have or have used, but I can't complain ONE BIT re: the 1.8. Good luck.

I have the AF-50 f1.4D and its just a superb lens, there are times when the extra light is helpful, and the paper thin DOF is another tool in the box.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the 1.8
I believe Thom Hogan even said so and some other tests I have read

Go for it.
PS: I did have one. But sold it to my Son-inlaw

I shoot wildlife mostly and longggg:> ))))

Sunrise and set I use the 24-120 VR first edition and it is also a great lens. It is my carry all day knock around lens

Happy Thanksgiving

This was taken with the 1.4G lens, ISO 400, 1/30s, F1.4. Cropped from a larger image. I am no pro, as anyone can see, but I enjoy photography and my D300. Fun and fast! Any C & C on the picture would be welcomed. Picture not shopped, lightly edited in ViewNX, D- lighting.

Debated this choice myself a month of so back. Read all the reviews, forgot most of them. Thought about the higher cost and heavier weight for the 1.4. Decided on the 1.8, and happy with the results. it's nice having a light fast lens (compared to the Sigma 30/1.4, which isn't light).

...the 50/1.4G is very light in my opinion.

Not for me. But I speak as an enthusiastic amateur on a tight budget.

If I was a working pro, it probably would be worth it to me.

I love the f/1.8 primes and have the 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm. Cost me about $700 for the set (a little more today) and I think it's a terrific line up of glass for the money.

50mm f/1.8G wins Hands Down !
In reply to malch, Nov 25, 2011

In terms of sharpness, fully open it beats the pants off all other nikon mounted 50mm prime :

http://nikonrumors.com/2011/11/03/seven-50mm-prime-lenses-for-nikon-f-mount-compared-by-cary-jordan.aspx/

I have the Sigma 1.4 HSM + nikon 50mm 1.8G, for portraiture, the Sigma has more "character" (pastel colors + creamy bokeh) but it is less reliable, misses the focus from time to time. The 50mm 1.8G is smaller, extremely sharp at 1.8, all across the borders and costs only 200$.

I have the following 50's

  • 50mm 1.8D
  • 50mm 1.8G
  • 50mm 1.4D

And without a doubt the 50mm 1.8G is the sharpest wide open, the results are truly spectacular. The 1.4D has a razor think dof which imho makes it kind off useless in real world scenarios. The Nifty Fifty is a great lens but the colors are a bit under saturated like the 1.4D but equally sharp stopped down to 2.8. On the 1.4D I had to stop down to 2.8 to get something nice.

So in comes the 50mm 1.8G with an aspherical element to rule them all. Well the 50mm 1.4G doesn't have that element and the bokeh between the two G's are very comparable, so I just sold the other 50's and I kept the 1.8G.

I have 1.4 d. 2.8 is the sweet spot as someone else mentioned. I love the lens. Bokeh is nice IMO. No experience with the others. I have an old pancake 50 e series that I MF on my D40. It's also very nice.
