nikon 50mm1.8g vs 50mm 1.4g worth it?

How good is the 1.4 in sharpness in large apertures compared to the 1.8? I once had the older d lens but I am considering buying the g version but I am trying to justify paying double.

I have the 1.4g and I am still dubious about its merits at 1.4. It's the only lens with 1.4 at 50mm, but it's not all that sharp at 1.4. And I do not find myself using it at 1.4 all that much. Maybe the art of shooting at razor thin DOF is lost on me. Besides I hear 1.8g is very just as good from 1.8 and on. For some time, I thought I should have sold the lens when the price was good after that Japanese Tsunami.

I have a 85mm 1.4d which I love and also a 35mm 1.8g but it is a mix bag. I am now reconsidering on buying a 50mm again since I got a second dslr body. I think it will work well with the nikon 85mm 1.4d when doing outdoor portraits.

This question has been discussed numerous times on this forum, by doing a search you should be able to find them.

Also, there are several online reviews and comparisons of these 2 lenses (google for manurovs for example). This will give you the exact answers you are looking for.

A very quick and effortless "50mm 1.8g 1.4g" search in Google yields several results, with 2 of them being in depth........

My personal experience mathed those of the reviewers: the 1.4g has just a little bit better bokeh up to f/4, but the 1.8g wins in overall sharpness, especially at larger apertures. I sold the 1.4g and never looked back.

In other words: if you want sharpness wide open, get the 1.8g instead of the 1.4g

This past summer my 50 1.4G fell about two feet and something inside broke and was floating around inside the elements. Because I needed a fast 50 for wedding work I bought a 50 1.8 G to tide me over until my lens was back from repair. Well, when I got my 1.4G back I sold it (with full disclosure). The 1.8G is sharper at 1.8 than the 1.4G is at 1.8. I think the 1.4 does better at close focus distance, but over all the 1.8 is sharper. That beings said, I agree that the 1.4 has slightly better bokeh. It has 9 blades vs the 1.8's 7 blades. It's something you and I and forums members might notice, but not something my typical clients would notice. The 1.8 is slightly cooler in colour I find. I haven't regretted the decision at all.

I did a ton of research on the 1.8g vs 1.4g as I was willing to spend the extra for a prime go to in my bag.

Do a search on google.. there are a ton of reviews and literally all I read said that the 1.8g was sharper and quicker. Two items that are critical for me in a lens of any price even 225 dollar lenses.

Yes, I gave up a little in low light shots but if the 1.4G is not sharp at 1.4, then really what did I give up?

Good luck and gotta love the hunt!~

I am in the same boot, have 1.4G but do not like it. I can save 100€ if I sell it and get 1.8. One of the best reviews for this topic is

I tried to reply before but the site was down. Anyways- thanks alot for the info. I made my decision and I am sending for the nikon 50mm 1.8g. I just can justify paying double. I think a 50mm complements well with the 85mm in what primes is concern for outdoor shoots. I will always use my 35mm for indoor shoots so now I have pretty much covered 35mm 50mm 85mm. I think I am becoming a prime lens geek.
