s100 Talk: Macro Mode
Oct 27, 2011

I rarely take macro shots but I thought I'd give Macro Mode a try on my new S100. I think the mode works well but, sometimes, it seems to get stuck and doesn't focus properly. To get it out of the "stuck" mode, I shut off the camera and start again. The same thing happened when using macro mode with the S90.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is there a work-around?

Here are a few snapshots that came out okay. Images are edited except where indicated otherwise.

Wow, with all the people in this forum who said they bought the s100, no one has anything to share about using macro mode?!

Hi, mine will hunt sometimes but if I choose an area to put the focus point on that has some contrast, it works pretty well. Or if I just keep holding the shutter down halfway it will nail focus after a few seconds. I've not had it stick though as you mention. I will post some pics maybe later today. Good luck.

Thanks, Carl, for the response. Would love to see a few of your macro shots when you have time to post them. I'm going out with my camera to test again.

A few macro shots attached.

When I do macro shots where I place the camera without looking at the screen, I'm not very happy with the AF. It locks on to what I want maybe 50% of the time, which would be ok if I wasn't on macro mode. Why would it lock on to background in macro mode? Or on a random patch of grass 15' away?

Anyway I haven't done that much with it yet. I might have a setting wrong someplace.

Small focus point & FlexiZone

Thanks for sharing them!

I think that may be a big part of the problem. I went out today and switched the focus point to small , a setting I saved to the customizable My Menu Settings menu. So much higher success rate locking focus with the smaller focus point!

For photos like your second and third, I'd probably use FlexiZone and adjust the position of the focus point. I've written about my experience with FlexiZone here: http://www.digicamhelp.com/camera-logs/canon-s100/s100-flexizone-setting/

Thanks for the flexi-zone suggestion Gail. I felt there should be a cool shot in there somewhere, but just couldn't figure it out. (Ie, the glowing coal and hookah smoke breathed out.) I don't like those two shots much but they do show some potential for the macro mode.

On the AF frame size, I actually do have it set to small. But I also remember now that I set it to center only, not adaptive (or whatever they call that), and since I was holding the camera in a position where I couldn't actually look at the screen, I probably had the leaf slightly off center.
