Spybot S&D on a bootable CD.
Sep 6, 2011

While chasing down "help" suggestions received in another thread ( http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1004&message=39287921
) I stumbled across this (link below):

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/bootablecd/index.html

Waiting for delivery of a CD might be a pain but regardless of that a bootable CD sounds like a darn good idea to me, especially if the program is effective in removing problems. I also liked the idea of working from the latest malware signatures even though you are booting from a CD.

By any chance has anybody purchased the bootable CD version of Spybot S&D ... results? Thanks in advance for your input.

Regards,

Spybot S&D is not one of them, but there are a number of others that you can download and burn to CD and boot into that run from Linux. Did you notice my post here?

Yet another way to approach it is to use a program that can burn some of them to a USB Flash Drive for you. For example, PenDriveLinux knows how to create a bootable USB Stick using G Data Antivirus (pretty good product with a high detection rate) and Dr.Web Rescue disk..

Or, as mentioned in that post, you can remove the drive and install it as a second drive in another PC if you want to use programs that are not available for Linux (the way the ones I've mentioned are).. That way, you boot into the clean drive (the drive already in the other PC) and scan the infected drive from it.

But, if not, and you've got a CD burner, try some of the products i mentioned in my earlier post here (burn them to CD and boot into them). I'd try Dr.Web, BitDefender, and Avira Antivir for starters.:

You might be able to use BartPE to setup a bootable Windows CD with something like SpyBot S&D installed on it. See more about BartPE here:

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

But, it's probably easier to use one of the Antivirus Products that have Rescue CDs using Linux as the bootable OS.. Then, all you'd need to do is download them, burn them to CD and boot into them. Again, see my post here for specific examples and download links;

Or, just remove the infected drive and install it as a second drive in another Window's PC (or plug into a USB Docking Station), boot into the other PC's clean drive, and then scan the infected drive using a variety of different programs to find and remove the malware from it.

But, to be safer, wipe the drive and install Windows and Programs from scratch. Even if you get rid of the obvious problem (the fake Antivirus Program it looks like he installed), you may still be missing other malware that the scanners don't know how to detect yet.

No, I didn't see your other post. You posted there while I was creating this thread and then copying files onto CDs. How does that saying go ... ships passing through the night.

Jim, thanks for all your valuable inputs to both this and the other thread, I really appreciate it.

You can make your own Spybot bootable CD but you will need to download Microsoft WAIK for your respective OS first. Spybot 2.0 has this built in. Spybot 1.6.2 doesn't but you can find it in the more downloads section.

Here's the link to the Boot CD creator.

Never buy version 1.0 of anything.
