Now that it's here, what should we do now?

Back to 12 MP's (instead of 14MP's) for less noise & better photo quality and other improvements. Well done Panasonic. Not everyone admit and correct their errors. Time to sell my FZ-45.

Is basically the FZ-35 12MP's CCD sensor in a FZ-45 body, a better 460K LCD screen, and some other minor improvements. A real improvement from the FZ-35. Basically what most people wanted from the beginning... The same photo quality of the FZ-35 but with the much powerful lens from the FZ-45 & FZ-100.

Lack of RAW and the fact that aperture is still at 5.2 at the long end is discerning to me, even more so than the fact it is using a warmed over 1/2.33" sensor instead of a 1/2" or even 1/2.15" sensor.

except the FZ35 offered RAW this doesn't, but at least it seems like to be using a newer venus chip even vs the FZ45/100.

This maybe a mistake. Maybe it has RAW capabilities and is just not mentioned on the specs.

No raw - if all goes wrong, it has no NR settings, too. Truly a cam for the masses ...

Not entirely. Dropping from 14MP to 12MP doesn't look good on the packaging and is going to cost Panny some sales to the masses, so they are taking jpeg quality seriously. Let's hope the new Venus jpeg engine will no longer smear fine detail in low contrast areas along with the noise at higher ISO.

No RAW....
In reply to Lights Perfection, Jul 21, 2011

Incredible....They go back to 12 MPixel and than you have to rely on their JPEG engine. Not the best one out there. Can't understand this as this is clearly an enthusiast camera and your standard P&S. May be a very good cam still, but no RAW means we are drifting away more and more from the ideal FZ60 bridge cam..

Back to CCD - Hooray !!

Hopefully Sony will see sense and do the same (I say Sony as they sell everyone else such as canon, nikon, pentax etc their sensors) .. Sony DO seem to make better pinhead CMOS sensors than Panny and Toshiba make better ones than Sony (used exclusively by Fuji though) so Panny either re-using the FZ38 sensor OR having made a fast version was a very good move indeed

Adding insult to injury: there's no NR setting. On the German Panasonic website there's no mentioning of an NR setting which was mentioned regarding the FZ45.

Looks like the FZ series has been dumbed down ...

This is very interesting.

RAW in the FZ35 was not much use as the JPEG engine did a pretty good job, so if it is the same sensor they may have just gone for good out of came results.

The 12mp CCD sensor will ensure that it has good image quality, no doubt about it.

But I have to ask, have Panasonic got another announcement to make? it would appear that this model has been deliberately pushed further away from the FZ100 type, so I am expecting some very interesting news in the next few days (or weeks).

Well there are 3 superzoom choices now. Fuji, Sony or this new Panasonic which has a price advantage.

Same sensor 1/2.33" CCD sensor as FZ100, but back down to 12 mega-pixels same as the FZ35. Is this an FZ35 instead of an FZ50 replacement, as expected?
There should be a review soon.

the FZ50 replacement happened when they made the 14-140 lens for Micro Fourthirds ages ago but no one seems to realise that, probably becsause they priced the lens so far beyond reason given the slowness, no one bar videographers and the very rich bought it (It's a £250 lens at most) . the G1 and its sucessors for Panny are the "FZ55" , they just need to re-price the lens which does the range

I did a quick check...it looks like this is going to be maybe $200 cheaper than the Fuji HS20 EXR. With fewer features, smaller, lighter. So it's maybe a mid-tier superzoom. Not designed to compete directly but to go after a different segment of the market. You could call that the
'non-prosumer market', to coin a phrase.
Might there be yet a fancier superzoom on it's way from Panasonic, soon?

The most noteworthy aspect, of course, is the drop to 12MP - well done Panasonic. Now, what's happening on the FZ100 replacement, are Pananonic going to do the same? Being an FZ100 owner for 3 months,, I'd be both pleased (IQ) and annoyed (drop in value of FZ100) if it too drops to 12MP. But is is a different (CMOS) sensor so no certainty it wi;; follow teh FZ47. I've done some more comparisons.
THIS IS AN UPDATED FZ45.
Weight, dimensions and appearance are virtually the same!
Check it out....

It will be using the same lens and basic body of the FZ45, but with the sensor that the 45 should have had.

This is a rare occurrence for a manufacturer to reduce the pixel count and a very welcome one at that.

I would expect that right now this camera would probably offer the best pixel level image quality of all the current superzooms.

Based on this camera's feature set, I strongly suspect that Panasonic are about to release another bridge cam with a higher specification than the FZ100, whether it will be a true manual bridge cam remains to be seen.

The tension mounts!!
