Last ever Space Shuttle launch
Jul 14, 2011

I was fortunate enough to go to school with Rex Walheim, one of the astronauts assigned to STS-135 that launched last Friday. Subsequently I received an invite to the launch that included a bus tour to the pad Thursday night (less than 600 yards from the shuttle). It was nothing less than spectacular. The launch itself was unexpected as the weather was so bad, so when it actually went off I found myself quite emotional...Knowing my good friend was on board and knowing it was the last really got me.

Anyway, here's a few and a link to the rest:

Roll maneuver underway

Note the pressure vapours near the top of the solid rocket boosters on the next one

The launch shots were taken with my D90, 300mm f/4, and a TC14E-II. I used a trip until it was to high to capture then released the ball and used it as an expensive monopod.

The night shots were with my newly acquired 70-200mm VR I.

Absolutely stunning, Ross. I was at the very first shuttle launch - Columbia - back 1981. I'm sure you had a blast!

Very nice and one of those once in a lifetime events, especially knowing no shuttles will fly again. Thanks for sharing!

What an amazing experience. I'm green. It certainly would be emotional. I've been watching the direct telecasts from NASA TV online.

Great shots. TY.

Being the last shuttle launch, it was an emotional event... but had to be even more emotional if you are friends with someone who was on it.

Thanks so much for sharing....

Jim

Add to that the weather that convinced everyone it wasn't going to happen...and then it did...yes, after it disappeared in the clouds I needed a moment to myself.

Very nice, Ross, thanks for putting them up. Billions for Afghanistan and whoever we're invading this week but no more for space exploration...

Well done. Wish I could have been there.

If it's not too rude can I suggest a little application of curves to enhance the contrast. Nothing you can do about haze on the day but post can eliminate it. Perhaps selective curves/levels required since the sky posterized when I tried it (but that's probably because I wasn't working with the original. But also the trees and grass got too dark.
