D300s mount to 70-200mm F2.8 VRII is loose and camera body moves
Jun 25, 2011

I have recently purchased a new Nikkor 70-200m F2.8 VRII and when mounting it to my D300s the camera body rotates very slightly but is is annoying when the lens is mounted on a tripod. The lens appears to be locked in place but is not firm. Is this normal or is there something wrong with the lens or camera mount? Has anyone else experienced this problem.

My 70-200VRII mounts snugly to my D300s with no play whatsoever. It sounds as though there is something wrong with your lens mount. Regards and best wishes. -iwbs

I can detect a slight movement between my D300 and heavier lenses like the 70-200 F2.8. It doesn't seem to bother the connections. If you can get to a store or friend try another 70-200 and see if it's different. Unless it's really loose I wouldn't worry.

If the contacts are not making good contact you would get a F0 on your LCD screen (top one) where your aperture normally displays.

there have been other threads on this subject a few months ago it would seem that its most common with longer (heavy) lenses and the 1.4TC .

I recently bought a brand new 300 F4 AFS and 1.4 TC ,both new and out of the box ,there is very little (barely perceptable ) play between lens and camera ,and the same between TC and camera ,but a noticeable movement between lens and TC . a fiar bit more than I would have expected ,however it does not (so-far) affect the focus or metering .

previous threads indicate its a common occurance ,with the use of TCs ,and it would appear the 1.4TC is the worse offender , I have been concidering contacting Nikon about it ,but have not so far as I am new to such lens and TC combos ,and assumed that as the lens worked perfectly that I may be overreacting ,and that this is the norm.

FWIW I went thru several 70-200 VRII, a different story, not for mount motion. Some were very tight some were less so. I ended up with one with annoying motion enough that mounted on my d700 my kids even noticed when the shot with it. That lens was tight on a sucession of bodies, D5000, D7000, and D3s. I am personally glad I didn't make the mount a big deal because I really like how this one has performed on my D3s.

mine has a slight rotation. .5-1 mm perhaps..everywhere Ive read about the issues..its deemed normal..even nikon web site says its normal..i think my instruction booklet also says its normal..

as far as the TC discussion..id have to say my 1.7 TC is a tickle tighter than the lens

Thanks for all the feedback. I am very happy with the lens performance despite the slight rotation of roughly 0.5 to 1 mm. I tried my new TC2.0 and it has slightly less rotation on the camera side and about the same on the lens side as the 70-200 when directly attached to the camera. Cheers for now. A...
