Magic of Lime Kiln Lighthouse
Jun 17, 2011

Here's a shot of Lime Kiln Lighthouse, located on San Juan Island. For those of you who are interested, let me tell you how I "made" this photograph.

1. I took 5 bracketed exposures (-4, -2, 0, +2, +4) about 20 minutes after sunset to capture the warm glow in the sky and detail in the foreground rocks afforded by the the ambient light. (ISO 80.)

2. I took a single, 30-second exposure several hours after sunset at ISO 6400 to capture the stars from the same spot.

3. In photoshop, I combined the 5 bracketed images to obtain proper detail in the foreground and sunset sky.

4. I finally placed the image with starts as a separate layer on top and used blending mode "Lighten". This allows the bright stars to "show through" while leaving the sunset colors intact.

I wanted to capture the sunset and night mood in a single photograph. I hope you enjoy the shot!

Mahesh; I agree with the above posters-- an absolutely stunning image-- very well planned and executed.

I do have a question re the sky part. Is there any exposure that would yield the star filled sky with no "star trails", e.g. a 15 second exposure at iso 6400 would be just one f-stop under your present sky, or 7-8 sec at iso 6400 would be 2 f-stops under. As good a photographer as you are it wouldn't surprise me if you tried a shorter SS but decided on the 30second one. Well, just a thought, and again, I love the photo.

edit: I didn't think to ask the aperture used for the star portion?

Cheers. ernie

clap clap clap clap, absolutely beautiful, thx for sharing especially the details.

One question, for the long exposure shot after a couple of hours of the first batch, did you waited all that time? Or you just approximately put your tripod on the same place?

nice job Mahesh.

Next time we take the boat up there I'm going to have to rent a car or take a bike so I can visit Lime Kiln and some of the other spots you can't get to with a 4 foot keel under you.

... another lovely image, Mahesh, well thought out and executed - as opposed to what I do - which is randomly point the camera at things and press the shutter button.

Thanks! Yes, it's considered part of WA. It's about an 1 1/2 hr ferry ride from Anacortez, WA to Friday Harbor, WA (San Juan Island). Then about another 15 min car ride to the Lime Kiln State Park.

Thanks, Ernie! I did indeed try several exposures and ISO values. I liked the 30 second one best because of the number of stars that showed up. Plus, the slight trail seems truer to the longish-exposure feel mirrored in the FG water texture.

Aperture used on the Star trail was f/5.6.
