the SD1 will offer "unrivaled " image quality............

"The SD1 will carve out a new category in the marketplace by providing high-end photographers with an alternative to very expensive medium-format cameras and digital backs, while offering unrivaled image quality," said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America, in a statement.

I don´t think so. At least because of Pentax 645D for the same price.

When Sony come out with their 24MP APS-C camera, it will have an instant rival.

maybe they have done extremely extensive comparisions and think that they win.

they may feel that they have hit the jackpot with this camera and for a group of pros

who do model shots for example, you can do no better than what they are putting on the table.

I don't think so. Better than MF? I think it will be more comparable to something in-between a Sony a850 to the next gen Canon 5dIII (assuming the rumors of 32mp are correct). It will be interesting to see the comparisons.

Re: the SD1 will offer "unrivaled " image quality............

well they are not that stupid.

they would not price the sd1 the same as the 645d and then state that they
are after the MF digital market , without doing alot of comparisions.

what do you bet that they purchased a few 645D and did lab tests with
advanced equipment ???

That may be true but...

How many of us really need that level of resolution?

Not to say that technology will cease to drive forward to ever increasing quality. But, I surmise, very few people can justify being early adopters at the current asking price.

Personally, I would rather that the technology have moved towards greater quality with the present file sizes e.g. ISO/noise, dynamic range! I will never have need to print wall size murals.

No need for that, take a look at the sample gallery....

I mean if you are going to make all these smart assumptions, it's also a smart assumptions their SD1 gallery is a showcase of the camera's potential no? I am not seeing the image quality along with the price.

Marketing statement....

do you believe them? Or do you look at images and decide for yourself...

seen the marketing statement from other companies? They read very pretty too.

It will be interesting to see. Luminous-landscape is going to do a comparison between an SD1, a Pentax 645, and a Leica M9. All these cameras have no AA filter. So it will be interesting to see the results.

Re: the SD1 will offer "unrivaled " image quality............

on this forum there were posts from people who were at the trade shows and
picked the SD1 over the 645D.

also there may have been a huge upgrade on the new software

there could be a few news lens that they are not talking about just yet that could
push things even more

they may not have shown all their cards yet

Re: even then............

Let's remember Sigma makes money on lens sales. If the SD1 camera were priced lower (properly so, in my view) they'd have say 100 customers buying the camera ... AND lenses. New SA mount users would buy SD1 + lenses. Current SA mount users would buy SD1 + better lenses...

Instead sell 1 camera (okay maybe 10) to a pro user versus 100 and lenses to pros and prosumers.

Again in theory and in practice, the camera is more a loss leader, like what a store may advertise on "sale." People come for the sale, and buy many other items, not on sale. That's where merchandizing makes profit!

I've spent far more on lenses from Sigma over the years than on camera bodies... and I bought SD10 and SD14 at "full" prices. And I was planning on buying additional lenses... OS and primes. Now I'll hold off...

I really think the marketing (price point) is wrong.... looking at it from Sigma's profit and success point-of-view as well as a (now not) eager buyer of the SD1.

I don't think even the 'pro's' will want a camera starting that $9700 that might be down-priced radically in future years (ie I'll wait 'til the 75% off sale). It really makes the pro buying it look like a laughingstock... no matter HOW good the image quality is, which I do expect to be super. Sigma really had a chance to impact the market with the SD1. At this price point, I don't think they will.

That is not interesting.

If some "needs" MF and this camera is as good as MF then Sigma has a point.

The problem is the SA mount though.

No MF shooter will be satisfied with SA lenses.

Re: the SD1 will offer "unrivaled " image quality............

Well, for me, it really doesn't matter. I was looking for a slight step up from my 5DII. I wasn't looking for a MF camera. If they did achieve that--great. I'm still a fan of the Foveon technology. But I won't buy one.

They should probably post samples on their site that back up that claim

because the ones currently there certainly don't. They are not bad, mind you, in terms of detail. Just not better than can be achieved using any far less expensive and more versatile full frame camera already on the market.
